6.5x47 flashole burr

I was reading that some of this brass has a flashole anomaly and I checked my new brass and it's there. Some have it and most are ok.I checked this with a 10x jewelers loop and it's very evident on some of them yet others are perfect.I went ahead and reamed all the flasholes so they would have the same bevel on the inside. Was there any other option that others have done to remedy this problem?

K&M tool that has a 0.058" tip...doesn't touch the ID of the FH. Drop it in and a couple light twists with little pressure...removes the bur without adding a chamfer.

Stevey--As Jason notes, the K&M tool works fine... but you need to ask K&M to hand-select one for you that's .058-.059. Otherwise you're likely to get one that will cut a .065-.067 hole. Ken at K&M will sort for one on request.

Or you can just turn down the cutter tip yourself.

after taking your suggestion I ran down and measured the Sinclair tool I have and the cutter is about .0555 I never used this tool yet for fear of oversizing the holes but the cutter on this unit seems undersized compared to the numbers you guy's are talking.

I got into another new box of brass and picked out a few with the bur.The reaming tool I have did the job even though the cutter is a bit small. Thanks for the help guy's as I assumed the reamer would oversize the holes and I never would have been aware of the different sizes of the cutters.

Steve,

Nice photo! I think it's better to have a cutter on the small side vs. one that's too large. Also I bet if you spin the cutter tip a bit so it's touching the max extension of the cutter blades it might read a thou or two bigger. The problem with Lapua brass is really just a thin flake of metal that extends from one side of the flash hole. The task is simply to knock that obstruction out. There's no need to otherwise change the diameter of the flash-hole.

I called K&M this afternoon to order one of their tools and spoke to Keith who told me that he wasn't aware of the .060" flash hole situation in the 6.5x47 Lapua brass. I asked him if he could hand select one for me that was undersize and he said that he would get back with me.

Who is Keith? Talk with Ken.

JB

Keith is one of the employees, sometimes answers the phones on the order desk.

Just found out that Ken is in the hospital with some heart trouble! It might be a while before he gets out.

My prayers go out to him for a speedy recovery.
