6.5x47 Donut

I shoot a 6.5x47 no turn and now have donut problem. So far I can't seat the bullet above donut without jamming. Would I create any problem by skimming the neck of new brass to get to the shoulder so I could turn to avoid donut problem with new brass? Thanks for looking

I am using a bushing die. I have ordered a custom Lee collet die to see if I can iron out the donut. Sometimes I use a Forster bump die with bushing or Redding neck bushing die and a body die if needed. Thanks

You can either turn your necks so the donut wont touch the bullet if you dont size to the base of the neck, or throat it out. I would throat it out.

Thanks, I thought about throating out. Does this need to be done by a smith or can I do it myself. I see throat reamers at PTG, is this a home workshop job? Thanks again.

Consider a K&M tapered mandrel or a floating sizing button. Either one will kiss that doughnut and push it to the outside.

You need a full length non bushing die, a K&M expander and mandrel and neck turner with a carbide mandrel that has a inside cutter. Size the brass and then expand with the expander and just skim the necks and the mandrel will cut anything on the inside and turner will cut anything on the out side….. jim

If you mandrel the ID then turn the outside, wouldn't that be enough ? I ran the mandrel about 6 or 8 times then immediately turned the OD.

Thanks

I would try to size an inside reamer that does not touch the inside of the neck but cuts out the donut.

Any reason that would not work?

If you have a donut and it will be from brass flow at the shoulder neck area. Invest in a carbide mandrel it as a cutter on the end and it will be the end of your problems. I use them all the time and never had a donut…….. jim

Jim

K&M list these as unavailable - https://www.kmshooting.com/catalog/foo/carbide-cutting-pilot.html Who else makes these?

Thanks

JCS

I think i would get in touch with them and see what is going on. It just maybe they are looking for a new maker or a price change or both……… The carbide mandrel is the best i ever used but it requires you to be very careful and a proper fit……. jim

Jim. Thanks, I think I'll just try and get a couple made locally here. Regards JCS

Cutter mandrel. I ordered an inside cutter for the 6.5 but even with a sized case the cutter was too small. New brass with a slight shoulder cut will be my next option. I will try a carbide button and full length die. Then a slight throat extension if that doesn't work. I think the Lee collet die will work but it is still 3 weeks out. Thanks all. I use a PMA neck tool so a cutter mandrel would mean a new purchase for turning.
