6.5x47 at close range?

I was considering trying to use a 6.5x47 Lapua at closer range like 200-300 yards to take advantage of The BC over the light 30s I use now.

What barrel length and twist would you recommend? I'm thinking 120-123 grain bullets, but maybe the 130s would be better??

How about freebore for the 120-130 bullets?

Hey if you feel like trying go ahead, you sound like your just looking for a reason to try 6.5x47, I did the same thnig not to long ago, just made up the same reason also ,I haven't time to do much testing I have a torn rotor cup, so I'm screwed, but I looked at it same as you, high BC bullets, I went with a 1&8 twist and .288 neck so If it doesnt work out I will just shoot it in 600 yard, I went with 25 inch LV Shilen #7 and light McMillan stock so it will be under 13.5, I can allways go to another stock I have for more weight if I shoot it in 600, It is on a Rem 700 action trued, I was just like you, I didn't have a 6.5 so I got one now, I shot about 20 rounds at 100 yards with no load development at all I just loaded I think about 38. something varget at .001 out and it group.6, with 5 shots, I bought allot of bullets by Hornady, Sierra and Berger, Lapua, all up to 123gr nothing heavier. I like it so far and can't wait to get my shooting shoulder right, recoil was light, seemed lighter than my 30 BR. if you got the money burning a hole in your pocket , do it, I'm not sure if we can ever have enuff guns to play with, I like my toys that go bang, Good luck.

120SMK seems to be a very accurate bullet in that size. It hasnt got much in the way of legs for anything past about 300-400m compared to the 123's and 130's.

i have 1000yd range at my home but never shoot 6.5x47 closer then 400yds as it not as much fun because gun doesnt miss. we shoot bowling pins out to 1000yds man what a blast. i am setting up to shoot at golf balls out to 350yds should make us have to bear down but will be fun as some days we cant shoot any farther because of fog. 6.5x47 is a great caliber and i try to shoot it every day.

i agree w/fourpower, i shoot 400-600 yds and laugh at how easy it is to bang the small steel plates! however, there is fun to be had throwing 3 or 4 into one hole at 1,2 or-
300 yds!!! i like the newish nossler 123's over varget.............BB dave

nonliberal, Nothing for sure wrong with the idea of shooting the 6.5x47 at close range it should work just fine. However your idea about BC are not founded in fact. Higher BC bullets mean almost nothing at the distance you mention of 200 and 300 yards. A higher BC bullet does not have any advantage until past 400 yards or so. Thus notice all of the point blank Benchrest Shooters use of Flat Base bullets in there shooting.

Are talking registered competition? I WAS going to build a 6.5 x 47L HV for possibly using in Score matches.....but the lack of custom bullets led me to concentrate in 6mm and 30 cal offerings.....plus there are too few 300 yd matches contested to invest that kind of money into w/o proven shortrange custom bullets that will AGG (as in all day long)
