6,5x47 against .260Rem.

So, in terms of pure accuracy, the 6.5x47 Lapua has the same potential of the 6mmBR at 300 meters, for example?
O always thought that short, fat cases with long neck area are better for accuracy. If so, why not the 6mmBR has an edge in accuracy over the 6.5x47 Lapua, all components being of equal quality?,It is a beginner question)

Lapua MADE the 6.5x47 to beat the 6BR at 300M...they could have just started making 260 Rem if they wanted to eh?

But they didn't...

take that FWIW,
JB

it will beat the 6br, but will it beat the 6x47 lapua driving the Dtac's and 115 bergers?

Right now I am leaning on going back to my trusty 6.5x55 swede for my WTC rifle's next barrel. I know I can make that caliber shoot. The 6.5x.284 in all fairness hasn't got the load testing it deserves..or I should have gone with H4831sc or H4350.

Too much stuff going on this summer...perhaps in the future.

Now I am also tempted in go 6x47 lapua, but I am not certain it would fair as well as the 6.5 in the Bodines winds.

RHINOUT!

I have fairly extensive experience with the 260 Rem., having burned out 4 barrels in load testing and long range competition. I've tried 12 different powders, 2 different match primers and 6 different match bullets.

By far any away, the most efficient powder in this cartridge, in my opinion is H-4350. If will equal or exceed the velocity of N-160, N560, H-4831sc and IMR-7828. ES and 10 shot group size was as good or better than all other powders tested. This was true in all my match rifles, with 123-140 gr. bullets.

My standard long range load in 3 guns was 42-43 gr. of H-4350 with a federal 210M primer and a 139 gr lapua bullet. Expect 2875fps to 2925 fps from a 30 in tube. All 3 LR guns had Hart barrels. I experienced loose primer pockets after 2-3 reloadings at 43 grs. Brass was Rem. My usual load was 42 gr. at 2875fps. Hope this helps.

Try Rel 19 or Rel 22. You will put away the H4350.

'12 different powders'... I'm betting he probably gave RE-19 a spin or two

For me, RE-19 shot fast and shot well behind 123gr Scenars, but was a bit peaky in the temperatures. Load that was fine in April had me thinking the gun was going to come apart in July. No, thank you.

YMMV,

Monte

Greg liked Ramshot Hunter in his .260 Savage with LW barrel. He started using H4350 because he could no longer get RS Hunter locally.

For the Swede VIN N560 and Reloader 22 are the tops. I can throw a 139-142 at over 3k from a 30 inch tube and have good load density.

I did use Re19. Desent velocity. Accuracy not as good. I've tried Reloader 19 in a bunch of different cartridges. It never shot as well as Hodgdon, Vihtavuori, or IMR powders in any of my rifles, so I don't use it anymore.

When I tried H4350 in my Rem 260 I felt like everything came together--nice small, round groups at short-range and long, and the ES/SD numbers were significantly lower than with VV N550, H380, or Varget, the other powders I tried. Varget, however, was wicked accurate at 100/200 using the Sierra 100gr Varmint bullet.

But a load of 43+ gr H4350 and 123 Scenars is a very sweet recipe for the 260. I was running about 2960 fps, measured with a Shooting Chrony, from a 24" barrel. That was about max in my rifle,Savage action). Interestingly, the 6.5x47 looks like it can match that easily, and hit 3050 with 120s in a 28" bbl.

I have to agree with moderator on the H4350. When I went to the 123s and H4350 I fell in love all over again with my 260.

I am on my 4th barrel and always used Varget with the 140s and it always shot well but not like it does now with the 123s and 4350.

I had tried some 4350 in one of my earlier barrels and it didn't seem to shoot as well as the Varget with the 140s but I did get some great velocities. I may have been pushing it to hard. I had tried a load a friend was having good luck with but my gun didn't seem to like it all that well. I should have played with it more I guess. I still have not tried it with the 140s.

I have decided to stay with the 123s for my 260 and go with a 6.5x55 and shoot the 140s in it. I loved the 6.5x284s but just to hard on barrels for as much as I shoot. I am hoping the 6.5x55 will give me the best of both worlds. Time will tell.

In my rifles, H4350 was unable to achieve the velocities I was able to achieve with Rel 19. H4350 did shoot well though. My experience with Varget has yielded two different results. With lighter bullets Varget will shoot very well indeed while achieving good velocities. With the heavier bullets I was unable to achieve the velocity of H4895 or others. I have not tried recent lots of Varget with the 139 grain bullets though. Some people have commented that they think the more recent lots of Varget are slower than the ones I previously tested with the heavy bullets though.

All my bullets are coated which may have some effect upon which powder/bullet combinations work best.

I was getting in the range of 2750 to 2775 out of my 24 and 26" barrels with 38 to 38.5grs of varget using naked 140s. All of my rifles liked the 140gr AMAX better than the 140s or the 142 Sierras. However my current 260 with a 24" Kreiger likes the 140 Sierra but then its the only bullet that will reach the lands and still fit in the magazine.

The wierd thing is I will get vertical stringing with the 140AMAX and the 142 Sierra unless they are right at the lands and the 123 Lapuas are a long way from the lands and shoot like a house of fire, go figure!!

I have also noticed that the Lapuas dont mind jumping a bit... :D

Hey guys
I'm new with the 260, But I've tried the Hornady 139 sst's and they shot like poop, like 2 inch groups. I've shot factory remington core-locks and they would shoot like 3.5in groups.

Then I tried the 120 SMK's with 47.0 H414 with just slight jump and "whooooa" .4's at 100yds. Holy crap, this metal pole can shoot after all.

I'm glad to see some of ya's load datas, I would like to see more if possible. Best website out there.
