6.5x47 .290 neck

New barrel coming and just want to check that I have this correct as I haven't had a "tight neck" chamber before:

.290" tight neck chamber;
so I need to neck turn to give a loaded round neck of .288";
What die bushing should I use? .286" ?

Does that sound right?

Buy some bullets first, measure as accurately as you can and see if they have a "Pressure Ring" to work out your loaded round diameter.

Be very, very careful if you are using Berger Bullets as they have done a major bullet design change on their 6.5mm Bullets without letting anyone know. The last batch I have of 130gr Berger VLD's are 0.085" shorter than their previous batches plus they no longer have a "Pressure Ring" and are not quite 0.264" in diameter....!!!! Has totally stuffed my very accurate 0.1 MOA based on their previous bullet design. Not happy....!!!!

I had the same exact chamber on my 6.5x47. Used a .285" bushing after turning neck walls to .0125". That gave me .004" neck tension and a .289" loaded round. Could turn the neck walls to .0120" for a little better chamber clearance and use a .286" bushing for a .288" loaded round and lighter neck tension of .002". Just get your brass, measure your neck wall thickness, then turn them to the desired thickness, seat a bullet and make sure it is .289" or less. After that you can decide on bushings that will give you varying neck tension to play with. Would recommend keeping your neck walls at least .0120", maybe .0110" at a bare minimum, or you will be defeating the purpose of a tight neck chamber

.001" clearance? That's way too tight. .004" neck tension is also excessive. .003" - .005" is what I would recommend and .002" neck tension.

What purpose will he be defeating going with more neck clearance than .001" or .002"?

With a .0120" or .0110" neck wall, he would have a .288" or .286" loaded round. That's .002" to .004" clearance. As for my .289" round, it chambered well from nearly zero runout and it shot every powder I threw in it very well. Never had any group from multiple recipes at 100 yards go outside 1/2" using the 130gr Berger VLD in a Krieger 30" 1 in 8" twist barrel and a few groups in the 1/4" or slightly less range. Just my experience, but it worked extremely well for me and I had no complaints. My suggestions are not "laws to abide by", they are only suggestions...
