.290" neck, .293" chamber,

I measured a loaded cartridge neck at .290" The chamber is .293". Do I need to neck turn say 1 or 1.5 thou on the necks, or can I shoot my 6.5 x 47 safely with .003" clearance? Or am I not fully understanding?

Also, if left at .290", a .289" bushing or .288" bushing would be just fine, right?

Thanks.

Stubbi>>>many, if not most, of everything on here is personal opinion. Most opinions are based on their own or a trusted friend's real life experience. I have had 3 barrels now in 6.5 x 47 and have found, in my experience, that 3K clearance is MINIMUM for excellent accuracy. I always have my chambers 3K over what a loaded round measures. Then I turn down my necks "about" 1K to knock off the high spots. That gives me right at 4K and I have found that to be ideal! Like I said, that is my opinion based on personal experience!

Thanks ShootDots. I have much to learn here. If you please, should I shoot this brass once before neck turning, or would I be prudent to turn the necks now before loading?

Regards,
Stubb

Here is what I do Stubb.. When I get virgin brass, I run them in a mandrel "to iron out imperfections" as it were. THEN I turn down the necks, then size them. Then I do something that may or may not be necessary>>but "my experience" tells me it works>>>I anneal the new cases after all that and run them into a sizing die again to ensure they are "round".. Then I load... I have found that the annealing process allows the bullets to seat "like butter" with no variations in neck tension. I hope this helps...

NOT to steal the thread but my question relates to the OP's thread.

I'm building a 6.5x47 using a std PTG fluted reamer. Just ordered up Whidden dies...ANY idea as to what bushing diameter I may need? I have brass and bullets on the way, same for dies. Tough to load without a bushing.

.290" ??

FN, I use a .286. However, remember I turn approx 1K off and I like 2K neck tension.. So if you don't turn your necks and want 1K you will need a .289 / .290 depending on your brass..

I'll be using nothing but Lapua brass. I'll order up a .289" for starters I guess.

FN, save yourself some $$ and order 2 or 3 bushes right now, you will use em. Murphys law dictates the one you didnt order is the one you need/want. And shipping prices are nuts, even for a single bush.. Just been my experience.. ;)

I agree,,,I'm going to order a few both up and down the scale. Living in rural MT One learns to be prepared. The part/piece/ingredient you seem to NEED is the one you don't have. LOL.

I was surprised when I checked Sinclairs...NONE of the bushings were in stock. Sign of the times. Seems anything you want is backordered.
