6.5x47 130gr loads or 120?

I am looking to develop a new load for my 6.5x47l. I will have an opportunity at a mile. my current load is 38.2 varget under 240gr berger vld's st 2830. o have a golden eagle on a 20 moa base so even at 15 power and dialing all my available elevation I I am right at the bottom post.

So I was thinking about working up a load of 130's or 120's that are on the warm side to see if I can get a little more magnification with a little more speed.

Anyone got any recommendations? I was thinking hornady or speer because they are cheaper and available. this is just for fun and something to do.

You would typically move to the heavier end of the bullet choice spectrum instead of the lighter end if your intention is to maximize effective distance for a particular cartridge. Twist rate of your barrel and chambering/throat must also be considered, of course.

In my 6.5x47 I found by looking at External Ballistics, the 130's struck the best balance between velocity and BC. I made good use of the JBM Ballistics page doing "What If" examples.

Like I said, my current set up wont allow it. I might be able to shoot once a year. I'm looking for more speed to be able to hold at least a subtensions at 20x on the target. I dont want to use up my berger 130 vld's. I know I can get 130 going faster and 120's over 3k pretty easy. I know it's not ideal but it's my best option.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I was thinking CFE223 but read on here it might have a ignition issues

I wasn't saying to buy a new scope. If you have a 20 moa rail, you can add Burris rings with the inserts to gain more angle to your scope. Just a ring change can make a big difference.

I thought about that. getting a set of Burris signature zee rings. I think I have enough room to get another 30moa.

I run 130 Berger hunting out of my RBROS 6.5X47. My load is 42.2 gr of H4350 at 2985 fps. This is out of a 26" Broughton. I don't know the reamer specs that RBROS uses, but it sure shoots good. So like always start low and work up to this. No pressure signs in my gun. Drops confirmed out to 910 yds. Far as my property allows me to shoot.

I run 130 VLD's at 3000 in a Bat with a 20 MOA integral base.

To shoot at 1750, with the 5.5-22 Nightforce on top, the base only gives me 70 MOA of total up, so I dialed in 63 MOA and held on the 10 MOA hash mark. While it goes subsonic at 1550, I saw no accuracy loss further out..

I run 130 vlds as well but dont want to use them shooting for fun (until the supply gets back up anyway)

I think I will go get 300 eldm 130gr. that will give me 50 to work up a load and another 250 to load all the brass I have. I think Ibwill go with h4350 which I have a lot of as well.

Still thinking about getting a set of the Burris rings.

What length of barrels are you guys running to get 3000 fps and over? I’m sure I could push mine harder, but to be honest I haven’t tried any other load than what RBROS supplied.

My 23" gun I run at 2820 with 130's. It wouldn't let me run the upper node comfortably.

My 26" gun ran at 2900 with 130's, and would not take the upper node either.

My latest on the Bat has a 28" tube and I can run the upper node easily at 3010. Brass is on it's 4th firing, and I still just neck size.

Varget for all......

Accuracy trumps velocity every time, even moreso at distance. Powders H4350, RL 17 (in my rifles similar load data and 100 fps more velocity) Varget. CCI 450 primers and 130 grain projectile, in my humble opinion, as others have stated, may be the best balance of case capacity and reasonable velocity. I don't believe you will be happy with results, as distance increases, if you don't use quality components. Good Luck.

What part is not is quality components?

Speer bullets... doubt that you will find many precision rifle folks shooting them.

Hornady ELD-X or M's should do fine, as will Lapua, Berger, Sierra to name some others.

26” Krieger 8.5 twist gets me 3000 FPS with 130 gr Berger and 39.0 Varget. Not seeing any obvious pressure signs either. Went up to 39.4 gr but accuracy appeared to be falling off. A friends 26” 8 twist Krieger is achieving 3000 FPS also with the same 39.0 gr Varget load and 130 gr Berger VLD also and he just had 4 shots around 1” or maybe 3/4” at 600 yards a week ago. He had one out of his 5 shot group that made his group around 2”. Still great accuracy. So this load is giving us the best accuracy and very impressive speeds at reasonable pressure. Our guns were throated for the 140 gr Hybrid so maybe the slight excessive free bore is giving us a break on pressure.

I am liking the Barger 130 AR Hybrid with Varget 37.1 grains.

Easy to shoot and very good accuracy at that node.

Not super fast, but that hasnt seemed to bother the groups at 600 much.
