Decided on another 6.5X284 for my backup gun this season for 1000 shooting. Last one I had I shot 140 berger VLD's and I was pleased with them. should I go right back to them or try something new first? whats the general thoughts on them?

I hear the berger hybrids shoot well, not sure if their available in 6.5 yet but u plan to try them in an upcoming 338 edge I'm having put together.

I would love to shoot the hybrids if there out yet. The only reason I am a little hesistant to shoot the 140VLDS is last time they like to be in the lands and as the throat wore I had to change seating depth and chase the lands. anyone try 140 Amax's?

Dragman,

I tried the 140 Amax's in my 6.5-284. They worked well but didn't have the accuracy of the Berger 140 VLD's. I had a hard time keeping 5 shot groups under 3/8" @ 100 yards. Very consistant though I wouldn't rule them out.

After some range time I can't get this gun to shoot the 140VLD's as well as I would like. 1/2" @ 100 yards is the best they would do. I played with some other bullets for the time being and 123Amax's have shot the best so far. I am going to go ahead with them for the first match but will be trying some others soon. I am shooting the 123Amax @ 3250fps with H4350 and it is shooting a nice little bug hole @ 100 yards. Who knows I might stick with them for this barrel

Berger shows their 6.5 140gn Hybrid @ $51.57 per 100.

Powder Valley shows 'em too @ $39.99 but out of stock. If you order from them check the price you'll be paying; mention has been made here on the fourm about them charging more than the price currently shown for bullets that are back-ordered.

Bruno's doesn't show them at all.

I shoot 850-1000 with this gun I usually don't shoot under 600. the 123's aren't exactly what I was wanting for that range but I don't have anything else to play with for now.

Another option in BCB bullets (Cauterucio's) in the 141's. I run em and love em. Hand produced one at a time.... No other 6.5 bullet for me as long as Bob is still making em.

there are a lot of bullets I would like to try after the first match. Unless these perform REALLY well I am gonna start development again the beginning of the week.

Right. That was why I asked; 123's to 130's ought to work very nicely at 600, even lighter at shorter distances.

For the long haul though the 140's are worth it once you get a combo that works well for you.

If you shoot 123s in a match you will get your azz handed to you unless you are that much better than everyone else! The 140 Hybrids are really good (I tested a box for Berger) but they were no more accurate than the 140 VLDs. I mostly shoot 130 Norma Diamond line but I am not shooting 1000 yd competition anymore. I used 140 VLDs for that.

I would use 142 Sierras before I used the 123s. You can do worse than the 139 Lapuas too.

I am gonna get thumped anyway probably this is just my factory backup gun. I didn't wanna use the 123's but I do know two other guys shooting the factory savage LRPR in 260's and they are shooting the 123's too and they do Ok, but are better shooters than me. I have some 140 hybrids coming I am really hoping they show up soon.

I'm currently running the 140 A-max in my 6.5-284 long range hunter. My match load is the 142 SMK and my hunting load was the 140 Accubond. I wanted to find a good all-around bullet that could serve both purposes. Mounting evidence of the A-max as a respectable hunting bullet got me looking into it. In my rifle it shoots comparably to the 142 SMK load, average groups 0.38 MOA (100+ 3-5 shot groups). I had difficulty tuning the 140 Bergers.

$.27 each at Powder Valley but they're out of stock for the moment. Stability Factor of 1.47 (worst case) in a 1:8 barrel, average G7 BC of 0.299... ought to fly pretty good ;)

You're not the only one. That's why they developed the Hybrid line: avg. G7 BC of 0.317 & seating-depth tolerant too! Pricier at $.40 each but worth every penny.
