6.5x284 vs. 7mm.08

donn

Of course, a lot depends on what you intend to use the cartridge for. Hunting? Plinking? Long Range?? Silhouette? I think you will find that you will be able to push the high BC bullets a lot faster and a lot easier with the 6.5/284 than you can with the 7-08.

Hi Donn And Ray i shoot a 284 yes in 7mm must be sompthing wrong but thats a different story. If you are shooting long range the 6.5-284 will launch a 142 gr bullet at 2950 safely and the 284 will launch a 175gr bullet at 2850 so at 1000 yards the 284 has a slight edge with hopefully a slightly longer barrel life. now the 7mm08 will be between 100 to 150 fps behind the 284 depending how heavy the bullet if you stick to under 168gr it should be not to far under 2800 fps but it is not at good in the wind as the 6.5 but it will have a good barrel life. I would advise if you are building a target rifle and want to use a 7mm if you have a short action use the 284 not the 7mm08 and if you have a long action you can choose between the 284 and 280Ackley 40 degree shoulder. If you are new at long range shooting and are not a verry experienced hand loader use the 284 not the 280 imp as there is a lot more work to make the cases.

Hey Bill

Nothing wrong with the straight 284W. I notice more and more guys using it now that high quality brass is available. I shoot a 280 Ackley but when I built it the only 284 brass available was Winchester and it was not very good. If I was starting out new I wouldn't hesitate to build either a 284W or a 6.5 x 284.

Cheers to you too mate. What time is it over there? You're either up late or up early.

the 7-08n is considered a top 10 in cartridge effeciency, while most 5.5 are considered overbore for the amnt of powder used. for hunting go with the 7-08 if you want to do some ling range target shooting or you think you might have some small hunting shots " across the canyon" go with the 6.5 better s.d. and b.c.

I am shooting the hornady amax 162 at 2780 ft.
,This bullet has a very good BC)
We have also used the new Sierra 175 and are getting around 2500 ft.
The rifle has a 27 inch barrel and i am using N550 with the amax
The difference with my 6.5-284 is small, max shooting distance is 800m) Barrel life is better with the 7/08 but not lengthy at those velocity's
