6.5x284 NRL hunter build

I've had a few 6.5-284s over the last 10 years all being 16# +/- hunting guns.

The 2840-2900 range always gives a nice wide node that shoots to the same POI and is easy recoiling for spotting shots.

My latest one is a Zermatt Origin with a Timney Calvin Elite and a 28" Lilja 3 groove 8 twist with a Harrels Tactical brake.

I've shot a lot of H1000 in the past, this one's running RL 16 and 143 ELDXs
I throated the Freebore out to get the bearing surface and most of the boat tail up into the neck.
glad to hear 3 groove is working. what are your overall thoughts on 3 groove vs 4 or more?

I've got more three groove experience than 4 groove, that's how confident I am in them. Most of my wins have come from a Lilja 3 groove.

@Hoodoo can correct me on anything I'm wrong about but I feel like I get less throat/land erosion from a 3 groove.
I wonder if the 3 has a wider land than the 4?

I'm really not interested in shooting anything with more than 4 grooves. I just feel the more grooves the more tolerances to hold and again I'm guessing but the more grooves the thinner the land?

I do know for a fact that anyone who worries that a 3 may not be as competitive as a 4 needs to find something else to worry about LOL

This is one of Carson's 3 grooves I chambered in 6 BRA with a @Northridge reamer.

I started the barrel off with 35 6 BR to BRA fireform rounds to break it in.
Did a one shot powder ladder then a two shot when I thought I was closing in on where I wanted to be.
Then a seating test all at 600 yards, the orange bull is 2"

Blue black and yellow are all <1"

The 2" red and the 1.8" orange were condition I think and everything else was <2"

Great barrels from a great company!

Thank you for the input.

You are absolutely correct @DHuffman. 3-groove is slightly wider land than a 4-groove, and twice as wide as a 6-groove. This is only correct for our barrels, I can't speak to how other manufactures are making theirs.

Less throat errosion is absolutely a benifit. I will say, the majority of what I've personally shot over the years has been a 3-groove, but the most accurate and consistant barrel I had was the last year I shot 1000 Yard BR full time at Deep Creek, and that was a 1:8 twist 4-groove.

Update, last years load of 54.1 Grains of H1000 has settled out at the exact same velocity as last year, 2860. Very pleased with how this rifle is shooting again this year. My cousin Kody and I shot blue ridge two weekends ago and where able to take 2nd place in the team division.

Ok, guys, I need some advice. I am getting ready to build a put together 40x type rifle,, ss 6.5x284, 40x wood stock, probably a 700 clone. I have two barrels, a 26 inch medium palma and a 29 inch medium varmint, the varmint weighs almost 6 pounds. the palma is right under 5 pounds, this from my bathroom scale. the med varmint is a big sucker, both 8.5 twist. Both barrels are from premium makers
Tell me your thoughts please..... I will be shooting paper and steel, no competition.
.88 muzzle for varmint and approx .81 muzzle for med palma.
I am leaning heavily to med palma. the palma is total 27 inches and I think I can get it finished close to 26 inches.
the 40x stock is for a 700SA, as you guys know, and it is a single shot inlet.
once in a blue moon, I would try to hit a gong at 1k, but 90% of the time way less than 600 yards.

PS, I love new baseball rules, challenge and faster game. it is a whole other world!!
