6.5x284 Norma

I am getting ready to buy dies and brass for my Savage F-class,

It says the Savage is chambered in Norma. I see there is a Redding Norma or Winchester Comp S die set. I guess I would have to get the Norma even though it is most likely the body die that is different in the sets. Yet there is a big difference in price between Norma and Win die sets.

Also Brass would be fire formed but can I only use Norma brass or can I also use the Lapua? I figure Noram brass is used in Winchester chambers without a problem just like Lapua.

What is the big difference in the chambers between Norma and Winchester. I know I have to look at a blueprint of them but I am to lazy right now.

The chamber is the same as any of the 6.5x284s.

Get the Redding dies, and use the Lapua brass, and you will be in "Pig City". ;) ;)

The Winchester 284 chamber is not the same as the 6.5 X 284 Norma chamber, very very close but not quite. When Norma decided to standardize their 6.5 X 284 they did not copy the exact dimensions, they made their chamber just a thousandth or two larger towards the base of the case, and the brass is a touch larger there too. But they are still close enough that most the time Lapua or Norma brass can be used in the Winchester spec chamber.

And by the way, find yourself some Lapua brass. Everyone seems to be out right now so if you can, buy a bunch.

It is a non-issue,aka MOOT) point, because no manufacturer holds tolerances "just a thousandth or two larger".

And no reamers hold those tolerances either. All of the 284 cases will fit all of the 284 chambers.

and I'll beg to differ. 99.9% of the time it shouldn't matter but if one goes with a very tight spec Winchester chamber and Norma does a sloppy run of brass then Norma brass might be tight. And I've seen really sloppy Norma brass. Of course resizing should take care of that.

And no reamers hold those tolerances either.
If a reamer I ordered didn't hold .001" for neck diameter I'd send it back. If the floating pilot sleeves for those reamer didn't hold close to .0001" they would be of little use either.

I also just found this doing a search

Don't know why it didn't come up the first time before I posted this

the difference in 6.5x284 norma and winchester in sammi chambers is in the throat the norma chamber has a longer throat. the difference in brass dosn't matter______treeman
