6.5MM BR

With a 26" barrel-How many FPS can you get out of the 6mm br case with a Berger 6.5mm 130 grain bullet? I think the BC is 0.595 .
I am hoping for 2750 FPS.
Thanks

I think that 2,500+ fps is a reasonable estimate.

I also think that is not really enough to shoot competitively at 1K yards. Even the 6.5x47L is at a bit of a disadvantage if the wind kicks up.

You can always try it and punch it out if it does not live up to your expectations.

I have a tought time geeting that with my 260 and 139 grs.I doubt you can get that with that case capacity. You will really have to pack the powder in for that.

I have an Excel sheet and max on there for the 129-130g bullets is 22-2300fps. This is of course for a 15" XP barrel though.

2750 fps are definitely out of reach, but a full case of N540 or Alliant Reloder 15,about 30.3 grains with both powders), should give you close to 2650 fps with a molyplated 130 grainer.
Not bad. Very efficient cartridge.

And a warning: N 500 series powders are VERY temperature sensative!

I have a improved 6.5BR. This case will get you to 28xx FPS with 140gr bullets. Has done it in several barrels. There is also a case called the 6.5 TKO, I believe, it is used by some silhouette shooters. If you go to a silhouette site, maybe you can find some information on it.

I have an XP in 6.5BR for IHMSA matches and run the 142s at 2300 using N540. However I am just shooting out to 200 meters. But I can hit oranges at that distance, all day long.

What Neil said, I thought it was the 6.5TKS, but Dan Theodore did alot of work with a 6.5BR AI type case, in California last I knew, threw 140's or so around 2700 plus, don't know and did not ask what pressures may have been, it should do the job, but at what pressures not sure if anyone knows.

Think myself, I'd just go 6.5x47 Lapua and not have to form brass or push it. You might look at what a 6br does w/105's or similar at 2800+. My 26" get's 2815, might be close in trajectory and wind to the bullet you talked about and velocity. No brass forming either.

Dave,

The entire line of VV 500 series powders are "energy added" powders. Hodgdon used to have some laboratory test data that showed a 10K psi pressure spike with one of the 500 series powders during their high temperature test. I believe George Weber is the one who first showed me the data.

I am personally aware of two people having, high) temperature related problems with 500 series powder. One "locked up" an XP-100 in hot weather in Texas and the other had a "blow up" that ruined the rifle's stock during hot weather in Arizona. Some other people report chasing zeros to an unusual degree with changes in temperature.

Both the 6.5 BR and 6.5 TKS cartridges, when loaded to achieve the velocities discussed in this thread, are operating in the upper reaches of the pressure realm and do not have a huge margin for a pressure spike of the type discussed.,For that matter what cartridge does?)

Should you choose to use these powders be very careful.

Rick
