6.5mm 155gr SMK

I was looking at bullets and saw this on the 6.5-284 info page, then started getting curious. I know they stopped making this bullet, but I'm curious who used them, and how accurate they were at 1k.,looking for first hand experience). I Googled it, and found some guys on sniper's hide who truly praised these things in a 6.5WSM. I was also thinking about what they could do in a 6.5-284?

I understand that this thread will be somewhat pointless, since we can't get these bullets anymore, but I'm just curious.

Thanks,

Walt

walt,

years ago i tried the 155 in 6.5 x 285 [1:8 twt] and it didn't work.

talked to sierra and they 'stated the bullet was designed for 6.5 x 06 shooters.

you might query BOB PASTOR of VIPER RESTS as he is the only guy i know that shoots a 6.5 x 06

ron

Hey Ron,
That doesn't make much sense.

The 284 case was designed to compete with the 06 for case capacity. Actually, the 280 which is a child of the 06 with .100 more case capacity.

IF the bullet was designed to be fired by the 06 necked to 6.5, the 6.5-284 should be very similar and a decent operation.

IN CASE ANYONE CARES, I have about 1k of them, and am willing to entertain offers.

Robert

Robert,

Since you have some, I'll assume you've tried them?

Ron couldn't get it to work for a 6.5-284 in a 1:8 barrel.... perhaps a 1:7 or 1:7.5 would get them stabilized? Or, is this a question of velocity, rather than stability out of an 8 twist?,specific to the 6.5-284).

Walt

morn robert,

only passing along info as i know it.

having said that, 15 years ago the 6.5x284 was just coming alive and long range shooting was coming along. i personnelly was playing with the 308 and pick up a 6.5x284 for S&G.

I'm pushing the 6.5/155's @ 3200-3400fps from a 30' 1:8.5' twist
6.5 SAUM chambering.
Sub 1/2 MOA to date w/1000 rounds down the tube.

Tried the 155's in my 1k target gun,6.5-06) they just didn't work know matter how I fiddled with 'em. Went back to Berger 140 VLD's and 142SMK's

I think the SAUM and WSM cartridge would be needed to get the true potential out of the 155's. Based on case capacity alone. What are going to use when you run out of the them?

I've always thought the 155s had too much bearing surface to allow them to be driven fast enough to beat the 139-142s. If they had the potential of being a better bullet in the wind, Sierra would be making tons of them, and you'd be hearing all sorts of good things about them.

The 155SMK is old technology. The 142SMK is a better bullet. I used them many years ago and they were not much better than the old 140SMK in a 1/8 twist barrel.

I have enough 500/rd boxes to burn out several barrels.
Steve,
I agree,the 155's are old technology,but weight bucks wind.
flatlander,
139/140's @ 3400fps won't carry the mail compared to 155's at 3300fps.

Running the numbers with Sierra's Infinity ballistic program:

155smk at 3300fps......10mph wind drift at 1000yd= 59.46in
142smk at 3400fps......10mph wind drift at 1000yd= 54.12in

it takes more than weight to buck the wind, it also takes lower drag. We must also remember that faster is not always better.
