6.5mm 140SST on Elk

My partner zapped a bull in Colorado yesterday. 140SST started out at just over 2950fps using V100 in his Savage. Distance was 357yds at a very steep downhill angle. Hit the top of the shoulder and destroyed the off-shoulder. Boolit was an inch shy of exiting. As they were cutting up the elk and found the boolit, the core fell out of the jacket. No big deal...the boolit did its job.

Interesting.

I just killed a Georgia deer at 250 with the same bullet out of my 6.5 Ackley. It punched through the little animal, expanded but did not put it down right away.

Thanks for sharing the experience.

I have had that happen with some bullets that killed lager animals without issue. I always figured it was because the bullet might have been a little to hard for some applications.

What model of Savage? What twist rate?
I have a Rem 700 in 7 rem mag I am about to give up on. The long range hunter in 6.5-284 w/1-8 twist is looking good for muleys. Congrats on the elk. My bother & his son just shot a 5x5 elk in WY. They used a 180 partition in a 300 win mag. They took several shots to bring him down @ 350 yards.
I was thinking maybe a berger would of made a bigger wound channel that a partition. Not 100% sure tho.

Some time ago several of us went caribou hunting and all of us used the SST's. There was one 280 and 2 30-06's among us. The SST's performed flawlessly. All 6 bulls were dropped in their tracks. I've used SST's on deer with my 6.5-06 both in 129gr & 140gr and had similar results to the above quoted post. Best bullet that I've found for accuracy and terminal performance for deer out of the 6.5-06 is the 120gr Pro hunter and for elk the 140gr Gameking both by Sierra. :) WD

I use a 140 grain SGK in my 260 AI for hunting and it is a great bullet at 2860 fps. Never shot anything bigger than a coyote with the SSTs. Killed a nice bear last year with that 140.
