6.5 X 55 Swede potential ?

I have a couple of questions regarding the 6.5 x 55 Swede.
As I read the reloading manuals, it appears to me, that the data they have in them is slow for this cartridge. What is the realistic performance potential for the 6.5 X 55 Swede in a modern action like a Remington 700 and good brass like Lapua? Also how accurate is it compared to say a 6.5 X .284? What is barrel life in this cartridge?

I've got a 30" Krieger 8-twist std. Palma contour 6.5 bbl. on my Nesika K, chambered for the 6.5x55. As you noted, most of the reloading data available takes into consideration the large number of surplus Swedish Mausers in circulation, and as a result, is pretty conservative. I've chronographed several different slow powders,H4350, H4831, RL22, A3100, N165, to name a few) with Lapua 139s & S142MKs out of my Krieger, and it's not difficult to find loads that will drive either of these bullets to 2900+fps with fine accuracy. Once you move beyond the max loads listed in the manuals, even for a rifle built around a modern commercial or custom action, it's imperative that you pay close attention to pressure signs. The Swede is a great cartridge in its own right, fully capable of competing with just about any of the popular 1000yd. cartridges, but if you're not willing to live with its limitations, and aren't going to be satisfied with less than 3000fps, go with the larger 6.5x284. From borescoping my barrel's throat on a regular basis, I'm guessing it'll go 2000+rds. before it's toast - maybe more if I set it back before it's too late.
