6.5 X 47 L vs other 6.5's

I read a lot :{could be my problem} about the 6.5 X 47 L being used in LR Comp. just wondering why this round is any better that other 6.5's? ie; 260, 260 AI, 6.5 X 57,ect.

There's other 6.5's? Was no other for me. 284 too expensive. Easier than the 260 to get good brass. Dunno squat about the 57. But I only shoot 600yd.

Best thing i ever did was build a 6.5X47L, I have yet to shoot mine over 600, but my combo with 123 MK's and CCI450's and H4350 is waay better than I can send them. I am thinking of a dual load for 400 and over with 142 MK's and stick with the 123 MK's 3 and under. Fantastic cartridge! After joining this site about 14 months ago within 2 months I was gathering pieces/planning my 6.5X47 build. Member Erik Cortina is at the forefront of this fine cartridge.

Thanks ALL, How many of you are shooting factory bbl's. It would seam that the more concent brass wouldn't fair any better that other brass sorted by weighed case volumn shot in factory heavy /varmint bbl's ??

I went from a 6.5-284 to a 6.5x47 Lapua, I gave up about 40 fps. but I now burn about 9 grains of powder less and barrel life tripled! What's not to like about that?

I was originally going to get a 260, but the lack of good brass was the hold up until I came accross the 6.5x47 Lapua, it offered 260 velocities with less powder, a better case design, and a small primer pocket to handle higher pressures, I was instantly sold!

For the last year I have been shooting my 284 Shehane almost exclusively trying to learn the gun and to prepare for some of the important shoots I was committed to, but one month I took the "47" to the monthly 1,000 yard match, and I came home wigh the win. It's a pleasure to shoot!

AFAIK, there are no factory bbls. chambered for the 6.5x47L. Could be that some of the European riflemakers are considering it, or maybe even already have a rifle or two available in 6.5x47, but if so, I haven't seen or heard anything about it.

I started shooting 6.5s with a 30" Krieger on a Nesika K LR prone rifle chambered for 6.5x55. No doubt about it - the old Swede is a fine cartridge in modern rifles. No sweat getting 2900+fps with 139-142gr. bullets, using 47-48grs of N160.

However, the more I shoot the 6.5x47, the more I appreciate how effecient it is, and how good the Lapua brass for it is. I've got an Eliseo RTS in 6.5x47 that I use in XC HP matches - I think it's a great XC cartridge with 107, 123, & 130 VLDs. Liked it so much that I put a 30" med. Palma contour Bartlein on a BAT 3L in a McGee prone stock, and have had good results out to 1000yds. with Berger 130VLDs & 140 LRBTs, using RL17. Very pleasant to shoot, long barrel life, and excellent accuracy - what more could you ask for?

I am glad someone asked this question. I have been trying to decide on a caliber for a Savage I am redoing. I have been torn between 6.5x47L and 6.5 Creedmoor.
The more I read the more it seems like the Lapua round is the better way to go.
