6.5 x 300 SAUM

Sure would appreciate any input regarding this cartridge. I haven't found much. I have a Model 7 in 300 SAUM and would like to know if 6.5 works well. I'm new to this forum.

Thanks,

Bergonzi

I'm working up three guns in 6.5 caliber. One is 6.5 x 300 WSM, one is 6.5 Rem Mag, and the third is 6.5 x 300 SAUM. The first one was done by McGowen on a Kimber 8400 with 25 inch barrel and 1 in 9 twist. This gun was built to shoot the 130 grain Berger. The 6.5 Rem Mag will be done in a few weeks also by McGowen. I'm using a Thompson Center Icon originally a 300 Win Mag for this one. It will be a 26 inch 1 in 8 twist intended for 140 Bergers. In order to do the 6.5 x 300 SAUM I have to buy the reamer. I'm using a Rem. Model 7 for it. Since powder capacity is similar to the 6.5 Rem Mag, I'd like to get some comparison information before getting into it too far.

Thanks
Bergonzi

I've run a tight necked 6.5-300 RSAUM chambering for a couple years in a WTC built Barnard P-O2 1K prone gun.
The 30" 1:8.5" twist Bbl pushes moly'd 155 SMK's @ 3200+ fps with ease.

Wow, that is a lazer! Thought my 260AI w/ 139Lapua's at 2920fps was good.

I got a model 7 300 rsaum......sounds like an interesting caliber.......what kinda barrel life do you guys expect to get or have gotten from this wildcat?

Tight Necked 6.5-300 RSAUM.
(I'm actually necking/turning Rem 7mm SAUM brass)

Necks turned to .295" for a .297" chamber.

Annealed after every other firing.
Velocity variations that can be counted on both hands.

Keep the chamber/case mouth shoulder clean or pressures/velocities will rise.

Depending on rifle requirements,a tight/turn neck may be counter productive.
Clean up the necks & shoot it!!!

1500rds & the Bbl will be cut down for a dall sheep/caribou/wolf hunting rifle

I've got a lot of 300 SAUM brass. I think running them through a 284 die then down to 264 will give me a lot of brass to work with in the neck. Since I'm having the reamer made I have some control over chamber size. I would rather be a little on the tight side. I can control the neck size.
