6.5 x 284 bushing die

I need to know what the outside neck diameter is of a loaded 6.5 x 284 using Norma brass. I am trying to detrmine which bushing to get.

Thanks for any help.

If it were a Lapua 139 gr Scenar and Lapua brass it would be .294".

After past experience I wouldn't use Norma 6.5 X 284 if you gave it to me.

funny you should mention that. I received a bunch of once fired brass with a used rifle. I plan on using a Hornady 140 Amax. I don't have dies yet so I cant resize and/or seat a bullet. Wanted to order a bushing with the Redding S full die set.

What don't you like about Norma brass?

When I was first starting with a 6.5 X 284 and on the steep end of the learning curve, I ordered 500 pieces of Norma based on recommendations from a couple of people.

When I started measuring it, I found neck thickness variations ran as high as .007" and fewer than 100 cases had less than .002" variance. Ended up neck turning those that would clean up decently, mailed a bunch to Norma where their QA guy admitted that they were out of tolerance but there was no offer to make good on it. To add insult to injury the Norma was more expensive than Lapua.

To top it all off, the rifles chamber has a .297" no turn neck, and cleaning up the brass left more clearance than I wanted.

So I bought 100 pieces of Lapua, closely inspected every piece, was very impressed and bought a butt load from the same lot number. Stuck with Lapua for all my match brass needs ever since.

This is not to say that there aren't good batches of Norma brass about, and I hope yours is out of one of those. Just that I won't be looking for it.

I use Norma in my 6.5/284. Diameter of a loaded round with Sierra 142s is .293" with necks outside turned to clean up around 80%. I am using Redding Type S dies with a .291" bushing with good success.
Have fun,
Mike Thomas
