6.5 X 284 Barrel length

I have a bunch of new Norma 6.5 284 brass and a Proof research 6.5 blank but it is 24 inches .
Is a 24 inch tube too short for this cartridge to be effective ?
The barrel has a 1-8 so maybe trying a 130 gr VLD's ?

I need some in put on this , mabey hold off and get longer barrel . Thanks Jason

If this is a Proof CF wrapped barrel, they're quite a bit more expensive than an all steel barrel, so looking at it like that, a 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Rem will last a bit longer for you and only probably shoot around 75-ish FPS slower than a 6.5-284. But, to answer your question, directly, I don't think 24in is to short for a 6.5-284. My 6.5-284 and my 6-284 both wear 26 inch tubes, but I'd have no concern using a 24in tube on either one.

Also, if you're screwing this into a short action, that'll narrow up the velocity gap between a 6.5 Creed or 260 Rem and the 6.5-284. The 6.5-284 shines a bit brighter in a long action.

My barrel blank is carbon wrapped and did plan to put it a trued Rem single shot action . I don't really have anything in mind to do with it but will probably shoot some informal 200 300 yd matches .
I have a HS adl stock, Rem 700 single shot action and this barrel blank along with a new reamer 4.5-14 Mark 4 with tmr and TPS rings laying around with case of Norma brass .

6.5x284
28" and longer barrel with long FB will get you upper node, shorter barrel lower node. Shoot it where it wants to be and it will be fine, try for the upper node and you will be trashing brass.
The proofs shoot fine for hunting but on longer shot strings for "Informal 200 300 yard matches" would not be my first choice. For that length barrel and distance a 6.5x47L would get you there with 8-10 grains less powder, less muzzle blast and less heat on that carbon.

Just my .02

I appreciate all of the post and I will probably hold off and get longer barrel to use the cartridge . Now the next question what would be good cartridge for the barrel . I have a Creedmoor so something different . I have 6.5 Grendel , Creedmoor , 260 Rem , 6.5 - 300 Weatherby

The 6.5-284 will work fine in a 24" tube. I like them to be at least 26" but thats just me. Most of the basic savage rifles have them chambered in 22" barrels and those still get a considerable velocity increase over the Creed. H1000 or Retumbo will give good velocity and excellent accuracy. The last Savage I worked up had a 22" barrel and with 55gr of H1000 I was getting right at 2900fps and half MOA groupings with 140gr Berger VLDs.

I have two 6.5 x 284's. One has a 24 inch other 26 inch and shoot the exact same load and dont see a difference out to 500 yds. They both shoot equally as well.

It's hard to beat the 6.5-284 in any barrel length. Just use it and don't worry about anything but accuracy. 200-300 yards is a chip shot for that cartridge in any length barrel. Sure the 28-30" barrel will optimize the cartridges velocity but accuracy won't change a bit going down to a shorter barrel. I have one in a 29" barrel and easily get 3000 fps and not even close to the maximum load. You'll still make 3000 fps but will be close or at max load. Accuracy in my rifle seems to be best closer to max load. Being a hunting rig, .5 moa is pretty easy at 3000 fps.

Normally I would always go with a 47L but in this case it would be splitting hairs with your current cartridges.

1- Carbon barrel = light weight which = recoil
2- Carbon wrapped thin barrel not ideal for long shot strings as they heat up.
3- for 200-300 Yards I don't waste my time barrel life and recoil with my 47L I shoot a 6br.

If I was trying to optimize these components for this intended purpose I would do a 6.5 BR or 6.5 Dasher and 108 -123 projectiles and it will still get you way past 300 yards with less recoil, heat and powder.

Yes that's right I had all of the things to make it go but i will hold off and get a Krieger to finish at around 26 or 28 '' . I had a MOA pistol that broke some parts that I can't find in 6mm BRX so I have ammo ect . for BRX and a 6mm blank in hand so thats what I am going with but I will have a 6.5 X 284 !
I also was wondering about 6.5 Grendel for this barrel . I also wanted to comment 338DUDE rifle Nice Rig I bet that is one comfortable rifle to shoot!

I want to say thanks to all the info and this site and members !! Jason
