6.5 x 284 and H4831SC

I took the new 6.5 x 284 / 7.5 twist / 26 inch barrel to the range to do first time 3 round group developments from 48 to 49.5 grains of H4831SC with the ELD X 143 grain bullet and Fed210M. Velocity is pretty low,,,2750 with 49.5 grains of powder. Book says max is 49 grains while another says 51 grains. I am aiming to increase the speed close to the 3000 fps mark. A slow node was found using 48.3 grains, and 2650 fps average. The OAL is 3.120" and .005" from the lands. I dont see any pressure at all. I will do a ladder to find max velocity. 2750 fps ave with 49.5 grains is the highest speed so far on the first trip out there. I hear some guys pushed it to 52 grains or around there.
What velocity are you guys getting with H4831SC and 26 inch barrel?

I shoot 3 6.5x284 rifles that I load developed for eldx. 52.5 h4831sc in 2 and 53 gr in the third. I get 2850 to 3000 fps. Start low and work up 52.5 is absolute max in both rifles and shows slight ejector marks while the third shoots 53 with no pressure signs at all. Start low and work up 2 shoot best on the lans one shoots great at .010 off . Remember every rifle is different and my loads are not representative of your rifle. Barrel length on one is 24 not 26

Well Asshats, a LOT of people consider both cartridges to be very very similar. I was pointing out that a mid level PRC load with the powder he was asking about and pushing a heavier bullet was producing noticeably faster velocities than what he was getting. I would think that a couple of smartasses could figure that out.

Retumbo comes to mind as an alternative with higher velocities but is rare as hens teeth lately. Honestly h4831sc is a great powder for the cartridge work up to pressure and you will get decent velocity and barrel life.

Thanks guys, I'll work up a ladder from 49.5 to 52 grains of H4831SC and see what shows. It's been the only powder I have used in the 6.5 x 284 and I was happy with it concerning accuracy.

My pet load is 51.5 4831sc with 142 SMK 3000 MV 26" barrel regular LR primers off the lands. This is not a hot load just close to Sierra's published max, which they claim is 2870 MV 24" barrel.

Is there another powder you recommend to boost the velocity faster than H4831SC? I have some RL 26 and IMR 4831 if that helps. I know for a fact that H4831SC gave great accuracy in both of my 6.5 x 284.
Is there not a load listed for H-4350? that seems to work best for me with the 140's. I personally wouldnt go slower than H-4831. good luck. some barrels are slow. most tend to speed up after shot a couple hundred times. 3000 fps with a 26 incher may not be possible...my 2 cents...

regardless, two different cartridges entirely and not interchangeable.

I started load development 15 years ago with H4831 and IMR 4831. Back them i was using sierra 142s and 140 Amaxs. The IMR was more accurate in my 30 inch barreled gun the H4831. As news of a very short barrel life came to me I looked into other powders, I could not get enough H1000 into the case to get decent velocity. I did settle on N165 as it is right next to H1000 on the flame temp chart. I would like to try some Hybrid 100v if i can ever find any. If you only want speed the double based VV powder 565 or some thing like that is plenty fast but will burn up a barrel in short order. Try the N165 it is easy on the barrel and can make decent speed. Mine likes the Berger 140 hpbt hunting bullet and JLK 140s.

Take a close look at VV N560. Ive worked with it in shorter hunting length barrels with the 140+ bullets with excellent accuracy and surprisingly fast speed. Vihtavouri has online load data for 6.5-.284Norma. I’ve used H4831SC exclusively in my 6.5-284 benchrest barrels from 28-30” length and never found a reliably accurate tune at or above 3000fps with 140 match bullets.

RE26 would be the fastest per Sierra app in the 142 grain bullet area. You already know IMR4831 may be little faster by looking it up. None are going to materially exceed H4831.

In defense of @SeabeeKen and @Baka , the 6.5 PRC holds over 3 grains more capacity than the 6.5x284 and 3 grains less than the 6.5 Rem Mag. How are you going to correlate capacity with equal pressure? PRC cases are not comparable to other similar cartridges. It is just Hornady necking down Ruger cases to get a toe in the market, sell cheaper factory ammo, so people can throw out misinformation like the 6.5 PRC is similar to the 6.5x284 and the 6.5 Remington Magnum. Don't get me started on the .300 PRC, as well as, the the word, "Creedmoor" :) Hornady needs to pay more attention to bullet and brass QC and less attention on so-called cartridge development. "A couple of smartasses could figure that out." Apples and oranges.

One last time. I NEVER suggested he should use PRC data for 6.5-284. But they are close enough to infer that if I’m getting 2890 with a like weight bullet with a mid-range load then he should certainly be able to get faster than 2750.
