6.5 x 06 A.I. bullet seating depth in case neck

I am getting ready to have an Shilen barrel fitted to my rem 700 L.A. receiver. I will be shooting a 6.5 x 06 A.I. from 100 gr to 142 SMK bullets.

Is there a recommended seating distance in the neck of the case, that will provide the highest accuracy ??

With this round, I have had good luck jumping my bullets from .010-.015. These have all been hunting bullets from Nosler, Sierra and Hornady.

Hope this helps you some, and good luck on your project.

This is useful data, how much of the bullet was pressed into the case 'neck'.

I am not the best person here to answer this. But I would like to offer this for thought. You are looking at only half of, and perhaps the wrong end of the equation. My understanding is that a minimum of one bullet diameter set into the case. And that would be starting where the bearing surface engages the case wall, not a measurement including the boat tail portion. This seating depth is a lessor result of the other end of the equation, that depth which establishes the optimum distance or lack thereof to the lands of the barrel.

My 6.5-06 with 142 SMKs got better when the bullets just touched the lands .. .. My OAL was a ridiculous 3.485" or so. Way out there, no joke. But that was never a competitive result, just an improvement. And at this OAL, I didn't check how much bullet was still left to engage the case mouth.

MikeF, it depends on how you chamber is throated. On my rifle the 140 grain bullets are seated deep in the neck, the base of bullet is well below the case neck. Remember 6.5 mm bullets are very long when you get to the 140-142 grain bullets. The Nosler Accubond 140's look more like a missile. The particular throat in my rifle has no problem shooting 100-140 grain bullets. I used a standard PTG reamer.

Hope this better answers your question.
