6.5 Weatherby , anyone?

It's been quite a few years since I loaded for mine but at the time I was using H870.

30" 8 twist , sleeved 700 action ,

1) 300 wthby brass necked down and inside reamed to either .258 or .260 I want to say?
2) 140-142 grain hpbt (sierra)
3) 84 grns H870 = 3450 fps (lot variances were quite large)
4) Fed 215 primers
5) Case life was very poor even using wthby brass

I can't say what powder today would be a close match off the top off my head but when I was using the H870 it had a large variance in burn rates from lot to lot and I wouldn't recommend following too many other peoples worked up loads without first creeping up to them..

Good luck , It was fun to play with but for me the ends didn't justify the means .

Retumbo might be a good one to try. There was loading data in the old Sierra book. An old no longer available powder was H570 that was used, very slow extruded powder. I shot a lot of it in a 7mm Rem Mag with heavy bullets.

Go over to Longrangehunting.com and do some searching. They have been talking a lot about the 6.5 STW and they are almost identical.

Anyone ever do a "6.5 Weatherby" based on the 257/270/7mm case?

That would make more sence to me.

Just a few years ago, there was a gunsmith in Dalton Ga that AI'd the Weatherby case and necked up to 6.5. He passed away. I visited him and talked to several of his customers that were shooting the round, they were all grins. They were shooting a 120g match king on deer, and as of that date, the gunsmith had some 60+ one shot kills reported to him, far and near.

The fly in the ointment in this wild cat was that the Weatherby brass was soft and the high end accuracy node was stretching the primer pockets in two firings. He fixed that by purchasing 10K rounds of PMC 257 Weatherby brass.

I was entertaining the idea of having him build me a rifle when it was reported to me that Bob had been found dead of a heart attack while quail hunting.

If I were going this route, I would use 264 Win mag brass and have the neck shortened on the reamer that I had ground to fit the brass, and match the freebore to to it's intended purpose.
