6.5 to 6mm sizing for 6.5 x 47

Three of us are 6 x 47"s, the first being delivered in a week. We tested one case last night, sizing it with a standard 6mm neck die. It seems to be okay, waiting for the rifle to check if it fits. Can someone tell what the best way is to do this?? Will this approach be fine?

Personally, I would look over the reamer print & determine the chamber neck diameter. Then measure brass thickness of downsized necks, multiply by 2, add to .243, and make sure my clearance is good. If it isn't, determine how much will need to be turned and go from there.

If you don't have a tubing micrometer to measure neck wall thickness, just seat a bullet and measure the diameter of the neck. It's actually more reliable this way anyway.

Call Graf & Sons and order a Forster 6x47 Lapua FL die - the Forster FL die works perfectly with my Henriksen 6x47 Lapua chamber reamer - very nice and very inexpensive! R.G.

Using the forster 6x47 FL die to neck down the 6.5x47 in one step left me with SCRATCHED necks.

Using a 6MMBR FL REDDING die to neck down in one step, worked well, but sizes the necks a solid 5thou smaller then the Forster FL die, soooo...

My next attempt will use a Redding 6mmBR body die as the intermediate necking step, finished with a Forest 6x47 FL die...

YMMV,
JB

What size neck are you using in your chamber ?? Could you polish the neck section of the die with crocus cloth to stop the scratches ??

Chamber neck diameter is irrelevent. but it is a no-turn. Polishing the die didn't help...taking the intermediate step did.

Did my first run last night using the 6mmBR Redding Body die as an intermediate...WORKED PERFECT NO scratches...

-Debur and lube outer neck lightly
-6mmBR Redding Body die
-6x47 Forster FL Die
-load

Enough of the neck was sized to allow a slight crush fit when chambering for better forming...Redding Comp shellholders are a great aid to get this fit...
