6.5 Super LR

I agree with Ebb, there is no way that the SLR will run with a 6.5x284. The 6.5SLR may be a fine cartridge but its no 6.5x284.

The 6.5X284 will easily push the 140s to 3000fps you can NOT do that with a 260 sized case.

Whats the difference between the 6.5SLR and the 260 imp 30 degree in performance?? I see from the posting on Roberts sight it shows the SLR running 142s faster than the imp 30 degree with the same bullets and loads. This is confusing since the imp has a larger case cap. than the SLR.

Care to chime in Robert?? I just ordered a reamer for the 260Imp 30 degree so I hope I was reading the above wrong.
Whose reamer did you order ? Am looking at doing same thing, have a brand spanking new PTG 260 Remington set up for the Lapua 260 brass and a 140 Berger VLD. Have 3 barrels to have chambered this winter and am considering going with the 260 30degree.

I bought PTG reamers last year for both 6.5x08 & 7x08 with 30* shoulders, for use in a couple of AR10s I was planning to build. For unexplained reasons, Dave ground the 7x08 with just a little less body taper than the 6.5x08: 6.5 shoulder dia.= .4551", 7x08=.457". If I'm reading the 6.5 SLR print right, the shoulder dia. is also .4551". My 6.5x47 print shows shoulder dia. at .4578", which is 1.4" from the bolt face. That leads me to believe tht my 6.5x08AR30* reamer wouldn't clean up a 6.5x47 Lapua chamber.

A 260/6.5x08 reamer would need to have considerably reduced body taper to clean up a 6.5x47 Lapua chamber - which is too bad, as I'd like to do this on one of my 6.5x47s, but my reamer definitely won't do the job.

I ordered a PTG about a month ago. My soninlaw has a 260 and wants to ream his out to the improved. I am going to rebarrel my 260 and try the improved. I am also going to have the barrel melonited so I hope it works out because if it doesn't I won't be able to go back to anything else.

I went with the improved because I have a bunch of 308 Lapua brass made into 260 brass and Robert has said many times that the SLR doesn't do well with Lapua brass where the improved design seems to shoot the Lapua well at least I hope so!!!

So here's the quandary: do you order the 6.5 Super LR, which uses the much less expensive Winchester brass and gets according to Whitleys tests almost as much velocity as the 260 Rem 30* (which uses the 260 Lapua brass) with several grains less powder. Both seem to be good chamberings, I suppose that if you really need the extra 100fps the 260 version would be the choice. My current 260 Rem in a Bat action is showing right at 2800fps with 42grn. of RE17, 140 Berger VLD in a long throat, excellent accuracy, yes the primers are a bit flat but easy bolt lift, etc. If 2950 fps or so is attainable with the 139/140/142 grain bullets, with accuracy being foremost consideration, it might be worth going with the 30 degree reamer.

I plan on probably shooting the 123 to 130s in mine. I have a 6.5x55 and think its a much better round for the 139s to 140s so velocity really was not an issue with me choosing the imp reamer. I would have infact went with the SLR other than the fact that I have 500rds of freshly formed Lapua brass. I am also thinking because of the extra case cap. I may be able to go to 4831 and get better barrel life with it than with 4350.

My soninlaw is not very happy with the 260 he has. It will shoot great one day and sucks the next. He's tried different bullets, loads and brass and its just an inconsistant gun. He is hoping the imp will be more accurate or at least more consistant.

I had one the same way. It was hard to find a load that shot well in it and I had over 400rds through it by the time I settled on a Varget load and 123s. It would still shoot some crappy groups for no known reason. I finally pulled the barrel on it and rebarrled it to a 284.

The one I am rebarreling now has just been a great rifle and I wanted to cry when it started going south right at 3000rds. It still holds .5moa or better to 600yds but have noticed it starting to open up at longer ranges. Usually a good sign the barrel is going away.

Well I finally got to shoot my 6.5 SLR for the first time today. So far it seems to like 42.0 grs. of H4350. Though today was not a good day at the benchs, I had a Siaga bouncing empties off my back and head and an AR with muzzle break sending percussion off my face. Yeah I know deer season is 3 weeks away but your not allowed to use these guns in Pa anyway.
A 5 shot group of pulled 140SMK's 42.0 of H4350 and FGMM primers gave me a .315" group. That was the only time I wasn't getting pelted with gas or empties so I'll have to give 42.5 another try.
Also all the brass was first time fired. One other note I ask for a long throated reamer but must have got the short as COAL is 2.738 at 10 off. Didn't get to chrono as there was to much going on at the range. Guess I'll have to tick the neigbors off and shoot in the back yard this week.

U just gotta love those public ranges here in PA. There should be a designated area for those pop pop pop guys and its not next to me. They get the "Excuse me in case you didn't realize your hot empties are bouncing off myself and my equipment" If a second notice has to be given it isnt as polite >:( >:( >:( >:(
