6.5 Sherman

When you look at a 6.5 sst2 IMHO Richard got it right ? fits in a .308 mag without blinder plate , plenty of room left to chase lands .
There are a couple of details to pay attention to.
Resize die is to small , you will need to send back to Forster and have nk opened up to .291 ,forester will turn around in less than 2 weeks. Also remove guts from die , they are non bushing so pick up mandrel from 21st century . .2625
and you will be good to go . Brass comes head stamped now and needs necks to be skimmed for consistency.
My set up is with Broughton bbl 27" which sends a 142 SMK 3017 over 58.1 gr. H1000. for tagrget shooting. I do not see a need to push them faster , if your hunting then use a different powder and you can get them up over 3100 .
Sherman short tactical 2 reamer spec is the way to go , fun cartridge with wide spectrum to load around . 2900 f/s -3100+ f/s .

SST is a short action cartridge
neck (.317”) and shortened the throat on the reamer so that the SST has a 2.795” coal with a 147 ELDM and will cycle through almost any action.

You would want to talk to Rich to see if your die will size a Sherman case correctly, I would kinda be surprised.

How well did the Berger's shoot at that speed? I don't have any experience with them and am wondering how well they shoot at those above average velocities. I have wanted to do a 6.5 (most likely Sherman) shooting 140's for my next build and don't have any personal experience with fast 6.5's to go by. Is it worth it to push them that much faster than 6.5x284 velocities?

The 140’s shot extremely well at that speed. I also shot 142, 150 and 160 gr Matrix. All shot good with the 160 being the least accurate. I have not shot my Sherman for a couple years. Need to form some new brass and try the Hornady 147 and maybe the 156 Berger.

Good luck with that 147 ELD. You might want to research that before you pick that Particular bullet.

Why is that? I got 200 of them. Thought the BC was pretty good and I’d use them to bang steel.

Has anyone experience with the Sherman. I have a 6.5 brux barrel and a pre 64 model 70 in 06 that Im considering chambering for the above. Was also looking at the 264 win. mag. but know bolt face an rails may need some work.

There are 3 6.5 sherman cartriges now
The 6.5 long is based on the 270 winchester case so it does not need a magnum bolt face. I have the long version and the max. The max requires a magnum bolt face. I can run a 140 gr. Berger at an honest 3300 fps with the long version, but it shoots best around 3150-3200.

Some people have had blow ups under match conditions. They've held together fine for me, but I'm going a pedestrian 2750fps in my creedmoor.
