6.5 rem mag

I doubt I am much help, but 5 yrs ago someone commissioned me to build some hunting rds for him, think 100.
I leaned heavily on Quickload if you have access to the program, data was a hard find.

I've shot the 6.5 Rem mag for a good number of years and currently have two, both 1x8, 28 inch MTU contours, one a Brux & the other a Pac-Nor super match. Both are on long actions though so my loads would be too hot for one built on a short action. I can tell you that I got damn close to 3400fps with a Berger 140 in the Pac-Nor.

Been shooting a 6.5 Rem Mag hunting rifle for over 10 years now. Shes a beast with powders like H1000, RL22, RL26 and RL17. I easily push the Berger 140gr HVLDs up over 3200 fps in a 26" barrel. The first one I shot out pretty quick cuz I couldnt keep my damn finger off the trigger at the range. So much fun to shoot. Parted it out and sold everything off. I now have two 6.5 Rem Mags in the safe (me and my son's custom hunting rifles). Both are built on LONG actions to allow more case capacity while seating the 140gr VLD to the lands and out of the donut area. Its definitely one of the best hunting rifles I've ever used. Awesome accuracy, super flat trajectory, low recoil, and excellent retained energy capable of taking down any north American big game.

Here's a couple loads shot from my 6.5 Rem Mag. Currently using the RL-26 load because RL-17 burns really hot and is harder on barrels. Barrel is a 26" Shilen 8tw.

PLEASE START LOW WITH THESE CHARGES AND WORK UP IF YOU TRY THEM IN YOUR RIFLE!!!

And here's two groups I shot with my sons new 6.5 Rem Mag I recently built him. Groups are at 100 yards in these photos. This one wears a 24" Wilson 8tw barrel. Wilson barrels definitely shoot. These two groups are .5gr different in charge weight with RL26 and were fired consecutively one group after the other with brand new prepped but unfired Remington brass.

I got this shaw barrel about 4 yrs. ago. I'm getting a itch to finish it, to many health problems. I had the barrel done with a real long throat so i can seat bullets out to about3.120. Any help u folks can give would be great. Thanks Rich

Did you not see the load data posted on my targets???

Just go with the reloading manual data and figure out what your rifle likes. It's not like the 6.5 Rem Mag is a 'wildcat' or the 140gr weight bullets are new to 6.5mm. Most reloading manuals have data for it with all kinds of different powders.

The 6.5 Rem Mag is a an inherently accurate round that is pretty forgiving as long as you have a good barrel and build the rifle correctly. My rifles have always had a handful of loads to choose from with accuracy equal to or better than the groups in the pictures above. I could share a pile of different loads I've had success with over the years but it still doesnt mean they will work in your rifle...Just get out there and start testing. You'll find something that works ;)

If you're making hunting loads i would recommend the barnes 100 grain ttsx copper bullets. They are great! Low recoil , Flat trajectory , no lead in the deer meat. Speed is the key to it. These do not disintegrate like lead core bullets even when encountering branches or saplings or heavy bones.

I just picked up a custom 6.5 rem mag in a husqvarna long action with a ron smith gain twist barrel it's in excellent condition now I had a 6.5 prc loaded 127gr lrx with el 26 I would like to use the same combination for my rem but cant seem to find any load data for it anywhere do you think I could use the same load as there pretty similar in powder capacity?

As you can see above, I run 59gr of RL26 in my 6.5 Rem Mag using the Berger 140gr VLD (3208 fps and no pressure signs). With a lighter weight bullet max charge weights will almost always end up being higher than a heavy bullet. So being that a 127gr bullet is lighter weight, just start at around 57gr with RL26 and work your way up.
Might be around 60-61gr before hitting max pressure on a 127gr
