Just to start out with I’ve always reloaded rounds for accuracy… Didn’t care that much about velocity as long as the groups were small. Shot mainly between 100 and 300 yards and never had much of a concern for anything else. Now getting ready to shoot extremely long range, 1000 yards to 1 mile. The rifle is a Bergara premier with a 26 inch barrel and a EC tuner brake. Components being extremely hard to find, I got a hold of some Norma gold target match ammunition and with the tuner brake, I was able to get it down to one ragged hole at 100 yards. went to go shoot at 1000 yards and had no issues using that ammunition. but if I use the same ammo (2880 fps at the muzzle) it goes subsonic (1080 fps) at 1 mile. Now I have a premise, to shoot at say 1 mile with the Hornady 147 bullet I would need to be going about 2900 to 2950 ft./s to stay super sonic at this location. If I can load to that velocity safely and I’m only loading to magazines length roughly 2.950 inches would it make sense that if I could get there and then use the tuner to adjust grouping, should this work instead of doing a full load work up and hope I have the velocity needed to go to a mile? Or, don’t worry about going sub-sonic?
