6.5 PRC barrel twist

New cartridge for me, seeing many saying 1-7 1-8 twist. Heaviest weight bullet will be 130g copper and I actually have a 1-8.5 tube spare… thoughts…

I'm also new to this cartridge as I got my 6.5 PRC factory gun last Jan, which has a 1:8 twist. And I decide to order a couple high end replacement barrels just to have ready since I don't expect the barrels to last all that long to get me through just a year of shooting. So, as I spoke to some technical people at some manufacturers about twist rate for using projectiles of 140-156 grs to go out to 1000 yds. , their recommendations were to go with 1:8's and they didn't feel any need to go with anything faster. So, though I was initially thinking of 1:7's I was convicted to order the 1:8's.

I have a 1-7.5 because I wanted the option to shoot 150+ bullets. In retrospec, I could have gotten by with
1-8 because the 150 SMKs shoot so well.

Actually today the 7.5 would be a great compromise for the 6.5s. The 150,156s would get optimum stability and the 120s still would be very accurate as well if deciding lighter bullets were preferred.

It does shoot the smk 150 anf berger 156 extremly
well. The 156 is unavailable at most dealers

I agree with @L.Sherm go with a 1 in 8 twist. I shoot all the way up to the 153 A-Tips in mine with no issue.
I would not go to 1 in 7.5 especially for the bullet weights you mention. I think some research may show that most who have reported blowing up bullets were shooting the 7.5 twist.

7.5 is likely gonna put you over 300,000 rpms with a 120 and S.G up near 2.5

do you know the length of the 130 copper pill? You can throw that into here to see what twist should work at what velocity.

The 1-8.5 Barrel that, you HAVE, will probably work FINE,.. up to "most" 140 gr. Cup & Core, Bullets !
The 135 Classic Hunter and 140 gr. Elite Hunter Berger's ARE,. "stable" at, 3,050 FPS and 2,500 Ft Elev !

a load at much lower velocities with a long bullet. The faster twist

130 COPPER? IMHO WON'T blow up. I'd do a
1-7.5 NO question, best to have it and not need it than too needed and not have it!

I just bought a 6.5 PRC Wea. Vanguard with a 1-8
If I decide to have one built I will go 1-7.5. You never know what new bullets will be made and a 130 would still be accurate in a good barrel. For any mono it is a non issue and with a PRC case or bigger the vel. when you shoot something up close will call for a tough bullet anyway if 130 gr. or less.

With a mono 130, I doubt you'd have any problems with a 1:7.5" or a 1:8". I went 1:8" and have often been worried how it would handle the 156 gr Berger. bit I haven't been able to find them in stock. So far, I've been running 140 hybrids, 143s, and 147s.
