6.5 creedmoore small pocket primer question?

Hi All,

Just got a new Browning X-Bolt Target Max in 6.5 creedmooore.

Got some factory ammo too..

Planned on making loads for it and got components:

Lapua cases
Sierra Matchking 140gr
H4350 powder
CCI 400 primers

When I went to prime the cases, discovered they were small primer pockets...had just assumed they were large primers...
Had the CCI 400 small rifle primers...went ahead and primed the cases to prepare....

Waiting for powder to come in and in the meantime checked things regarding small pocket primers on the 6.5CR case.

I see some people say not a problem for standard loads, some say use CCI 450.... possible issues if HOT load?!

Question 1:
So looking for advise if it is ok, assuming I go with a standard load of like 40GR of H4350 (approx 2625fps) , to go ahead with the cases primed with CCI 400??? Should I drop it to 39.5 Gr (2600 fps) on the powder?

These rounds would just be initial shooting at 100yds to get things close to setup.

Next time around will get the CCI 450's if I want to kick it up a notch!

Question 2:
Should there be any issue using the X-Bolt with small rifle primers? It should still work right?

Thanks

I've shot a lot of CCI-400's in my SRP Lapua .308 cases with no problem. I did have a problem with some Alpha brass with CCI-400's and apparently that is due to Alpha's larger flash hole and going to the 450's worked just fine for Alpha's.

I think where you're going to have an issue with 400's or not will depend on your particular firing pin, the firing pin spring and the brass you're using. I'd go ahead and start firing some and see what the primers look like afterwards. I suspect you'll be just fine with the Lapua SRP brass, but you won't know until you test.

You may not have any issues with the 400s but I personally like to use the 450M when using powder charges up around 40 gr. or more.

Well I just ordered another batch of 6.5 Lapua brass, WITH LARGE RIFLE PRIMER pockets! Realized now after the fact, that I also have sizing dies (lee and small base redding) and probably would need small decapping pins! So, now not sure what to do with this batch of Lapua with small primer pockets ( with CCI 400 installed)! Arrggghh.

With the large primer pockets, I then would plan to use the CCI 200's which I use in .308s with no problem...so I guess those work here. (308 I have down pat now!)

Can anyone recommend something other than CCI 200 for the large primer pockets on the 6.5 creemoores?
OR confirm that the 200's are good for this case?

Again, would be using H4350 powder for these loads, and 6.5 Sierra 140Gr Matchkings.

Learning experience I guess...first time using 6.5 Creedmores.

Thanks for the inputs.

The key word.."MAY" not have an issue...
This is a brand spankin new rifle...so don't want an issue like a burn thru doing something to the firing pin the first time I fire it! With my luck would happen...

And, as you mention, and I see a lot of others using CCI 450s, which would be a better choice.

I really made a mistake and did not realize on the initial purchase of the cases that they were small primer pocket. Didnt realize they came in that form...assumed they were large pocket...uggh.

I just ordered another batch with large primer pockets...problem solved. I am taking the extra $$$ as a learning experience...ouch.

Start low with just charging only one case at a time and then firing it and go up from there one at a time .
I can't really do one at a time...I have to shoot at a range. So cant bring reloading setup there...ha ha...
But as you say, that might be a way...

Also realize, don't want small pocket version anyway. causes other issues ... need smaller decapping pin, now another type of primer, switching decap pins if I get large primer pocket brass...then a mish mosh of things.
Trying to keep things simple..

More than likely someone will take them off your hands at a fair price.

Once you are testing your loads if the E S & S D #s are not where you would like them to be you might test different primers to see if another one would lower those numbers.

for SRP Lapua yes you will need to .058 decap stem IIRC
I see Redding has a universal decapper for small primer pocket, but that already is 1/3 price of another batch of Lapua. Not going for the small primer pocket...I am going to just go with another batch of Lapua but with large rifle pockets...like I I should have done in the first place...live and learn...
