6.5 Creedmoor & VV powder

Thinking of trying a VV powder in a 6.5 Creedmoor with 140 gr. class bullets. Any suggestions on which VV powder(s) would be good to try? I'll be heading up to Widden's asap and pick something up. Any information will be appreciated.

6.5 Creedmoor / 140s often fall between N150/550 and N160 in terms of powder preference. When I shot one, it preferred N160, but others get far better results with N150.

That is no doubt why Viht introduced N555 which has a slightly 'quicker' burn rate than N160. If restarting with the cartridge today, that's the one I would try initially.

Here's some data I collected with 136 Scenar-Ls on H4350 and N550 in separate sessions. N550 data was collected in ~80F whereas H4350 data was probably ~60F. Also including data from a session with 123 Scenars ( N555, N550, Varget). All data from same rifle. The 123 data is kind of wonky bc I did 3 shot groups with N555 but 2 shot groups with N550 and Varget. fwiw I prefer N550 but ended up switching to H4350 bc I had 16lbs of it and thought maybe I should use that.

I did. But reloader's that are actually loading different powders like Laurie, definitely give better information than that Vit chart.
Also I'll add that before I go to purchase I'll run Quickload to give me a better idea also.

FAFO.....
The Find Out is directly related to how much you want to invest into Fk'n Around to Find Out.
Sorry there's no short answer, I believe 565 is to slow from loading the 6.5 PRiC triple nickel or 160-165 for 140 class is where I'm fixin to go with a gas gun...
My FAFO factor is high Especially on thier dime.

It just worked for me in a long-freebore 260 Rem I had with 140s seated well out. I'd agree that the slightly lower-capacity Creedmoor case would make N565 marginal especially at mag-length COALs, and therefore not a first choice option.

Here are the results of range tests I did with the long-throat 260 with the 142 SMK and N550, 555, 560, and 565.

Note my comments on QuickLOAD's unreliability with the program's default values for N550 in the above feature. That applied to QL V.3.6, but has apparently been carried through to the current V.3.9 version which now treats some Viht grades (notably N160) as faster burning than previously. (Using it recently with N550 in 308 Win, its calculations were again way out, and in the wrong direction too suggesting much higher charges than would be safe.)

Going the other way, I get good results from the powder in the slightly larger capacity 6.5X55SE with 142gn SMKs. I have noted though how much faster the barrel heats up compared to similar MV loads with my usual N165, so have discontinued use of this one.

N-555. Its burn speed was intended to compete with H-4350 in the needmoor. IIRC it is a cooler burning powder also.

Yes on both counts. Re the latter, it has a lower specific energy rating than the other N500 grades (lower even than some N100s) at 3,700 Joules per gram weight. I have a friend who describes N555 as "The Viht N100 powder that pretends to be a 500".
