6.5 Creedmoor Build

Hello All,

I searched the forums here and really didn’t find what I was looking for so I’m posting here.

I’ve got several “traditional” type rifles (bolt action, lever action etc…) and I’d like to build myself a 6.5 Creedmoor. I’m trying to find either a video or more likely an article on “how to build and AR 10” rifle.
I had always thought that there was really 2 parts an upper and a lower and you put them together and you have an assembled gun but I’m finding out that there are other “parts” that can be bought for a build. Evidently the individual parts can be swapped out for upgrades or colors???

Anyway I’m looking at this upper https://ar15parts.com/products/24-6...ass-bead-ss-barrel-15-rail-comp-brake-bcg-ch/
which is a 6.5 creedmoor SS barrel with an 8 twist and I’m wanting an 24” long barrel. I liked this one that I posted the link to.

Does all uppers actually work with all lowers? I’m guessing not so thats why I’m looking for some good article to read for reference.

I’d like a lower that has adjustable cheek rest and it would be nice if there is an adjustable trigger pull weight. I’m looking to build this for longer range shooting.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Yep, or just but a whole BCA rifle. I purchased 1 around just before Xmas and it still has not showed up yet, but it is in transit, I started off with a 20'' 308win and also purchased a 22'' 6.5CM upper to go with it, I plan to basically gut the everything but the barreled upper and the lower and add the up graded parts I want like trigger ambi safety rifle length tube and stock and adjustable gas block and Ultrdyne Apolo S break, the rifles are cheap enough on sale so the upgrades don't hurt the wallet to bad LOL!!!!

Thank you for the info! I did more looking around for uppers on Areo and I really like this one as well and its cheaper then the original one that I posted.

Spend your money how you want, but BCA does make decent and accurate products, I have a bunch of their side charging uppers and there all sub-MOA or better @200m with Match bullets, I hand load all my ammo so I can tailor my ammo to the barrels, I also agree with a 22'' 6.5CM length, the AR10's are heavy! my 22'' upper weighs 7lbs by itself but it is a heavy barrel upper,

My AR10 build:
  • Wilson Combat AR10 Receiver Set and Hand Guard (FDE).
  • Wilson Combat Lower Parts Kit.
  • Wilson Combat Pistol Grip (FDE).
  • Geissele SSA-E Trigger.
  • MAGPUL PRS Gen 3 Stock (FDE).
  • JP Enterprise Buffer Tube & Silent Capture Spring (SCS).
  • JP Enterprise Low Mass Enhanced BCG w/High Pressure Bolt.
  • Radian Raptor Charging Handle (FDE).
  • 24” Bartlein, 5R Barrel, 400MODBB, 1-7.5” Twist, +2.3” Rifle Gas System, & Craddock Muzzle Brake (Black Cerokote).
  • SLR Adjustable Gas Block .875.
  • Lancer L7 AWM Magazines.
  • Nightforce ATACR 5-25x56 (C555).
  • Nightforce Ultra-mount - 34 mm 1.54” 20 MOA (A681).
  • Assembled by Craddock Precision https://craddockprecision.com
I love this rifle. Pleasure to shoot.

Only recommendation would be buy once, cry once. Craddock usually has already assembled complete uppers. I purchased all my upper components (Barrel I got from him) and sent them to him for assembly.

I have an ongoing thread on LRH with build info and load development.

If you will ever carry or use this rifle in the field, you need to look at a gen 3 rifle. I've owned a DPMS gen1 rifle for years and I like it but it is needlessly heavy. To me it is a bench or tailgate only rifle. Gen 3s use a smaller lighter receiver and more ar15 parts and are much lighter. Gen 1 was the only thing available when I got mine, but I would not buy one now unless it was a bench only gun.

While a 24" barrel will provide the best velocity, it makes for an extremely long and unwieldy weapon. As a guy with a LR-308 in 6.5 CM and a 24" barrel, I wish I would have gone shorter.

Also my AR cannot tolerate as hot of loads as a bolt gun, even with a high-pressure bolt.

If I were you I would buy a high quality complete weapon with a warranty, and save yourself the headache of the mix/match parts unless you understand the compatibility issues of a building AR-10/LR-308 rifles.

Something like this would be a much better option.

how much total weight if you don't mind saying?

Thank you for this info, I’m really looking to use it for longer range shooting. My physical issues don’t allow me to do anything really other then bench rest shooting.

Thank you for your reply, yes this is exactly what I’d be using it for is bench rest longer range shooting as my physical issues don’t allow me to do anything else.

Thank you for your reply and suggestion. After reading a lot of the reply’s I’m realizing I don’t really know much about building an AR gun. Watched many YouTube videos but short of building one and learning what and why they don’t give you that background.
I have actually come across another offering but it’s not an “AR” build which kind of peeked my interest. Beautiful gun and fits my collection.

Its not out yet however to my knowledg.

The CZ 600 Range is out in the market. Not a lot of accessories available like the Rem 700 clones but I have had nothing but good experience with CZ bolt guns in the past in terms of accuracy, and the triggers are good too.

If you don't want to do a lot of research and potentially trial and error with a large frame AR just buy one that is complete and with a warranty. A good quality one isn't cheap.
