6.5 creedmoor 140 eld seating into donut area

Factory chamber puts me well past the donut area with 140 eld's touching the lands. They shoot excellent though. should I not worry about it? I dont load hot at all, I stayed with the lower node around 2650fps so Im not sure if that helps. I do fl size without a bushing and anneal. Im on the 3rd firing and still no sign of a donut. Think I should just keep shooting them and not even worry about it? The 140 hybrids put me well above it, but dont shoot nearly as good.

Keep on shooting them and don't worry...assuming you will keep loading them with the pressure ring above the donut.

on a fired case, insert a bullet. If the bullet goes past the shoulder neck junction, you do not have a doughnut. If you do have a doughnut, then a K&M neck turner mandrel with a cutter on it will take care of the doughnut.

Good luck

Vmax, how short is your freebore? The usual reamer for the 6.5Creedmoor has 0.199 freebore to accommodate 140gr class bullets. With my gun I loaded 143 ELDX's at 0.025" off the lands and the base of the bullet was below the neck/shoulder junction but the junction of the boat-tail and the bearing surface was definitely above the n/s junction, which is where the donuts seem to form, if they form, in unturned cases. I had never had donuts form in unturned cases (.17Rem, .270 Win, 22-250, .243, .300 Weath.Mag) on cases fired 3-5 times. If you are not turning them you may not need to be concerned at all unless you getting many more loads out of a case. You can, as pointed out above, use a neck reamer to remove them, or, as Grimstod noted, you can neck turn just into the shoulder and reduce donut formation....or...like mentioned also...use a neck turner with a reaming (end-cutting) mandrel.

Its a factory savage lrp. Checking with a hornady gage. OAL of about 2.835 touches with 140gr eld. Ive been using some factory loads here and there and they do shoot really well. Rl17 has shown alot of promise and I finally got my hands on 4lbs of h4350 to try this week.

On my rifle (Ruger PR with LRI fitted barrel throated for 140 AMAX/ELDM, 200 shots down the tube) I was 2.248" touching the lands for a COAL of 2.289. About 1800 rounds later, with a Precision Ballistics 143gr (not the same ogive profile as the ELDX) I am 2.327" touching lands and for the bullet I settled on (Cauterucio 141 VLD) I am 2.327" touching. I have heard that Savage has had some short throated chambers so maybe yours is one of them...or mine is long? (chamber that is;))

Lol! 2.289? Did you mean 2.889?

I know the .30 cal 200 grain has a crazy long bearingsurface. If I put the 200 grain eldx in the lands and the 208 in the lands the 208 is almost 100 thousands longer coal.
But the new hornadays sure do shoot.

I'll keep loading them until I notice a donut forming. 3 firings and I got nothin so far. They shoot pretty solid 1/2" groups or better at 200 yards. Im getting anxious to try them at 600 and 1000. I wish I could find a good load for the 140 hybrids but I cant get anything consistent. One day they show promise than a week later not so much.

And...you may not ever get a donut. On the Hybrids you may have to work with your seating depth a bit to find the sweet spot. When I was shooting them I first started at 0.025" off the lands and tested from 0.005-0.030". It was recommended that I try testing up to 0.120"!! I did a test in 0.020" increments fron 0.020" to 0.120" and ultimately found, in my rifle, they shot the lowest aggregate of 20 shots at 0.070". My best 3 shot groups were at 0.025" but, like you state, it could not count on it shooting that every day. The 0.070" seating depth was much more stable.

I just started shooting my re-barreled CZ550 with factor 140Gr from Winchester and Hornady. The wood stock and set trigger require a long reach with the trigger finger. After getting a lot of horizontal strings, I reviewed Jim Owen's book on shooting at Camp Perry. Laying my index finger on the stock may have caused the strings.
Bottom line, I always look for something I did during shooting to explain odd patterns. It's sometimes me, not the rifle or the load.

+My .150 freebore chamber puts 140 ELD's past the donut zone. Using a Lee collet die I place a thin washer on top of the shell holder. This method has sofar eliminated any donut issues.
