6.5 Creed w/large magnum primers

So I was going so sit around and hide from the heat for three days but I’ve got 4000 Fed GM215Match, Magnum primers. Picked up 200 Lapua large pocket brass, so it’s not THAT bad at 6:30am only 85ish. I’ve got my HM at 600 with my 6BR so I’ve now put a 6.5 creed on and will try 1000 F-Open. Barrel has 500 rounds exactly and I have a load for it with cci 450s, thought I’d try the 215s. Shot a few lower charges Thursday evening just to make sure I wasn’t going to blow my face off. Saturday Pic#1 is at 100 yards from a good bench. 41.0 grains looked good to me with no pressure, LabRadar data fair. Sunday Pic#2 is at 500 yards from a good bench. 5 shot groups. 41.2 low? A little breeze came up but it pushed me left so I’d think higher? 41.0-.28moa, 41.2-.4moa, 41.4-.5moa, 41.6-.6moa and that one up high was not me. LabRadar data looks good. Firm bolt lift at 41.6 no case head marks. Monday Pic#3 F-Open on my belly with the horny toads and scorpions. I only had 20 shots so shot one was cold shot, sighter and for score. I couldn’t see most of my hits or I would of come up a click. I used a .264 expander and with spring back I got around .001 neck tension. Powder was to the granule. Funny how the ES goes up when you shoot more rounds. I’m gonna turn necks now and waiting on my Hydroseater.

I bought a Savage model 12FV on sale at Cabelas. Spun off the 308 barrel and screwed on a new 24 inch X-Caliber bull barrel in 6.5 CM. Put it in a BVSS laminate stock, and put an inexpensive SWIFT 8-32x50 scope in decent rings.

Loads were developed from Hornaday brass, 210M primers, H4350 and 140 gr Match Kings, resulting in 2664 fps.

I shot my first "for score" match last week with this combination and scored 242-5 overall. I'll attach a pic of my best target which occurred just before wind switched 180 degrees and I didn't catch up in time.

I am impressed with how easy and inexpensive it was to build this rifle. I've gotta say I learned it all here for the most part. A very rewarding hobby!

EDIT: I used H4350, not Varget. Sorry for the brain fart.

I'm old school. Attempt to use the mildest primer that gets the job done. Based on an old
Precision Shooting article about primer flame travel. There are exceptions, for me cold weather hunts and ball powders. Under those conditions, I will use a magnum powder. Going to test CCI 450's in my 6BRA. Based on what I see that many shooters can't be wrong.

So I turned all the necks and annealled. Loaded some up. 41.0 grns. Didn’t change anything but the turning which gave me really light neck tension, something like .0005. What a waste of components. Shot like crap. 1+ moa. I turned to get more even neck tension which I got but didn’t think super light tension would do that. Guess I’ll go back to .0015. Still don’t have the hydro seater.

Put a smaller bushing in there. Turning your necks means you need a smaller bushing to get the same tension. I landed on .004 under loaded neck diameter for all the creedmoors i load for

Magnum primers are a bit hotter and tend to move the pressure curve therefore you may need to back your powder off a tad and work back up.

I actually remember that article! RWS primers ended up being the best of all tested. Wish PSM was still in publication. Great magazine!

I have a lot of Remington 91/2 Magnum primers. Yesterday I loaded 6.5 StaBall with 140gr Sierra Match Kings in a 6.5CM. Worked well so will continue to develop loads using them.

I started shooting Starline 65. CM SRP brass 3 years ago.

When I decided to build another gun I struggled over what caliber to use. Then the light went on. Hey I got lots of 6.5 CM brass why not make a 6mm Creed.

Bought a set of dies and resized my 6.5 down to 6mm Creed. It's been about a year now and have had no issues with the resized brass, and I didn't need to buy new brass for it so I spent the money for the brass on something else, like a Vortex GE.

I never saw a lot of difference between standard and magnum, in the loads that I compared in the Creed. Overall, I use standard, except with ball powder, or loads of over 60 grains.
