6.5 cm suppressor grouping problem.

The problem may be in my reloads, but I can’t get a 100 yard grouping much better than 11/2 - 1 3/4 inch group. It’s not like just a shift in POI, it’s just poor groupings. Does that happen with a suppressor? Several bullets, several loads. I haven’t tried I suppressed. That’s next.

Never seen that problem with my 26" Savage in 6.5 Creedmor using either GMM or handloads and I run an OSS HXQD .338 mag Ti suppressor or a Delta brake all the time with no difference in POI. Whatta Hobby!

A suppressor affects the barrel harmonics and that can be good or bad, shoot it without the can on it and see if maybe the barrel is no good, or just doesn't like that bullet. I tested a 30-06 for a friend a few years ago, he complained of it not grouping very well. He was right, 6" groups at 50 yds with the 165 factory ammo he was using. I ran some 150 factory ammo through it and it went to 1" groups, evidently that barrel didn't like 165 bullets.

Yes….

What suppressor, how is it attached, and can you put a thread protector on it and see how it shoots without the suppressor?

Also, what scope? Is it new, proven, bought used, etc.

Aside from how attached (secure and tight). If there is any wiggle or it begins to unthread then your groups will open as suppress movement randomly shift POI.

Weight of the suppressor can make a difference…depending on length and materials the makes a difference.

Your rate of fire will affect your grouping. Keep in mind a suppressor is like a heat sump. It warms up the end of your barrel. The faster you shoot the hotter your barrel (now coming from both the chamber forward and from muzzle backwards) making it more likely for groups to open up. If you have a medium to light barrel profile then the suppressor weight and additional heat ing of barrel can go sideways fast on your grouping.

Great suggestions above.
  • Change one thing at a time, like shoot a group without the can
  • If it shoots well, something off with the can or fit
  • If it does not shoot well, look up other common component groups (bullet, powder, primer, brass)
  • Test each one, changing each component one at a time
  • If no joy, maybe the barrel is the issue?

When this happened to me. It was a bad thread job, the suppressor wasnt on straight and threw the groups out.

Try it without and if it shoots, you have your answer.

Thanks for the advise. I intend to shoot with and w/o the Omega 300 suppressor. I’II check and make sure the suppressor is tight and space out my shots.

If it shoots your reloads well with out the suppressor, then you will need to fine tune your load using the suppressor by either going up in powder charge or by going down. it should not be too big of a difference. At least that was my experience. I have two barrels that shoot great with the supressor and one needed a different load..
As Always stay with in safe load data...

Only time a suppressor will negatively affect a load/group is if the bullet is clipping the suppressor or if there is a problem with the way it attaches. The POI will change most of the times when adding a suppressor but I have never in all my years of shooting with suppressor seen a known good load go bad by just adding a suppressor to your rifle.

Thanks, Your advice and knowledge appreciated.
