6.5 CM barrel length

Ok, time to rebarrel my 6.5 Creed Savage model 12 F/V

What is the optiomal length and twist rate for a 6.5 Creed shooting a 140 gr bullet?

What twist and length was on the barrel you burnt out ? Did it not shoot the 140 gr decent ? If so then just re-barrel with the same bore/twist.

No it shoots .5 MOA at 600 yds.

Just wondering if a longer barrel than 26" would give me any advantage besides velocity.

If you handload, unless you are trying to solve something specific from a +26" I would say don't bother. 26" or less. I run 26" barrels + brake (sorry neighbor, but I am not given .gov $200 just so my brake does not blow dirt in your face). I did try the Criterion in 28" on the 6.5 Creedmoor. Yes I got a little more speed, but it did not really matter much since I handload and can push my loads pretty close down a 26" with the same/better accuracy. If you are going to run a suppressor I would go shorter (probably 20" and then shoot 130's instead of 140's). If you want lighter and handload, 20-24 is always an option, just shoot a lighter bullet if you go shorter so you can keep the velocity.

1:8 is pretty standard. The Shilen Select Match is a really nice barrel. Shoots better than a Krieger I had, shoots almost as good as my Bartlein's (none of them are on a Savage platform), and cleans up easier than any other barrel I own.

Depends on the use. The round was developed around a 28" barrel but a 26" will work well also as would a 24" depending on what you need from it. I want good velocity and handling for PRS style matches which I have shot my Creedmoors in since early 2008. I run 28" with a brake mostly. I do have one 27". If you are looking for the most velocity then stay 26"+ but any length can be accurate.

And if someone posts the Rifleshooter "test" in here saying that the Creedmoor loses velocity after 24", disregard it. ;)

thanks for the info.

I am using this for 600 yds shooting and beyond.

At this time I am happy with the factory barrel but wondering if I can do better with a custom barrel. If I go this route I was wondering if I should go with a longer barrel and if it would make any differance in accuracy.

I do reload and am shooing 4 to 6" groups at 600 yds with a factory barrel. Would like to tighten it up to a better group if possible.

Hell, I only got $400 invested in the gun (not including the scope and stock) and it shoots good. Just seeing if I can make it better...

My barrel at 23” I can push a 147/150/153gr bullet at an honest 2700fps and 135gr bullets are going 2800fps and 120gr bullets are a tad over 3000fps and all of these are at an honest working pressure and not at stupid pressures. Running a 150 class bullet at 2700fps you can keep the bullet above speed of sound out to around 1500 yards give or take a little. The gun will do anything I want it to.

You definitely will get better performance with a custom barrel. I would go with as long as you feel comfortable with when you do decide to rebarrel. Like I said I run 27" and 28" barrels plus brakes and have no problem getting around at matches. I honestly wouldn't go below 26" but everyone has their choices.

I am sure Frank will agree but I would highly recommend Bartlein barrels when you do rebarrel. They are great barrels. Very accurate, easy to clean and did I mention super accurate? ;) Below is 5 shots at 650 yards with factory Hornady 147 ELD ammo through my rifle with the 8 twist 27" med Palma Bartlein. I shot the first three and saw one splash so I moved point of aim up a little and shot last two. Get a Bartlein and you will be happy with the decision.

I have the same make, model and caliber you have. Shoots flies off a pile of cat food at 100 yards. The only improvement I had to make was change the stock to a laminated Boyd's then pillar bed it. Took the trigger apart cleaned, changed some springs, polished and embedded hexagonal boron nitrate into the polished metal parts. Took my trigger pull down to under 1 pound about 10-12oz. Made sure it still would pass a 20" drop test. Nothing more to do. When shooting, my breathing gets in sink with my trigger finger. When the right breath comes, I blow on the trigger and wow. My dad taught me at a young age the importance of breath control when shooting. Bartlein barrels are to die for. While looking at polishing equipment on Grizzly's tool web-site I was surprised to see they sell Bartlein barrel blanks. An article there said the owner of Grizzly's shoots F-Class with these barrels. They have won many a competitions. Don

Yes, I did change out the stock to a boyds AT-one. Bedded the stock and did the same to the trigger as you did.

It seems that i have kinda conquered the 600 yds with this and was looking at trying something else to challenge me with this caliber.

I am really being challenged with my .224 valkyrie and looking for something easier to tame... LOL

I've run a 30" Krieger, and now a 30" Bartlein in 6.5CM, informally in F-Open. They've both been stupid accurate, with the edge probably going to the bartlein.

In the Krieger I was getting ~2820FPS with H4350 and a 142 SMK, with the Bartlein I'm getting 2870 with a 140 Berger Hybrid (although velocity has dropped ~30 FPS now that it's colder).

I did shoot 147 ELDMs at 2800 for a time out of that Krieger too, until a few decided to blow up on me.

Both barrels were cut with a SAAMI reamer, and were shot with Alpha brass. RL16 will give you maybe an additional 25 more FPS.

I think I've only shot one 20rd string with the Bartlein, but I know for sure this one was it. Those 6.5CMs are good for 600 on in. The 284s and 300WSMs are going to walk away from you in the wind beyond that.

What platform is your .224 Valkyrie bolt or AR? I'm putting together a .224 Valkyrie in AR with a 22"-24" barrel either 1:7 twist or 1:6.5 twist. Want to see if this bad boy is up to the hype of super sonic past 1,000 yards. Should be ready by spring. I think we just broke the record for coldest month of Oct. Wind & Cold. I have not built that heated indoor shooting stall yet. Went from summer right into a cold wet winter. My pants were down. Not to mention my wife fell and broke her hip a month ago (replaced) two days later one of our animals broke it's shoulder. Busy nursing everyone back to health.
You say you want a challenge, move out to 1,000 yards then 1,700 one mile. The gun will perform for you. The At-Ones are real nice. Just went with the Pro Varmint.

My valkyrie is AR platform, 20", 6.5:1 twist, shooting 88 ELD's at 2530 FPS. So far i'm getting 2MOA at 600 yds (sometimes). It is a real challange but I am still chasing it.

Would love to shoot past 600 yds. I have only 1 range near me that goes to 1500 but it is a real hassle to get into the club due to a 2 yr wait list, high prices, need to be sponsored, and a 6 month probation period.

Let me know when you get that 1000 yd indoor range built. I will be your first customer. Hell, I have 6 inches of snow (day before haloween) and my trees still have their leaves on them. Snow came too quick this year.

I just burned up a 17" barrel in a specialty pistol, there isnt much magical about barrel length. You can shoot a looong ways with a short barrel

When 6.5 Creedmoor was still pretty young, JP sent two 22" 6.5 Creedmoor rifles to a match that had targets out to 1,000 yards and they won the match with Hornady box ammo, first time out.

A lot of that is a testament to the quality of JP rifles but it also says that 22" is enough to hit anything inside 1,000 yards. Maybe 20" would do it but shorter stuff is usually done for size, not accuracy.

22-28" is what I would suggest and with a heavy profile if you want to shoot long strings of fire.

Shooting country club... sounds a lot like Memphis. They have special membership and high prices at the good range here to keep people out. Great way to keep the sport alive.
