6.5 CM AR brass ?

For those that have an AR chambered in 6.5 CM, how bad is the brass being abused? Any reduction in life over ammo shot in a bolt action?

I’d have to hope that folks shooting 6.5CM in an AR(15) know enought to back off from loads more commonly fired in bolt actions.

Otherwise I want to KNOW AHEAD OF TIME if’n the one shooting next to me does!

(Now take a read of that other thread about Beginners with Too Much Gun....)

I have a .260 AR10 that I've shot quite a bit; although it's not specifically a 6.5CM, it's close enough to apply.

I'd say it depends on how your rifle is setup (buffer weight, BCG, gas block type, and most importantly the gas port size/location).

I run my AR10 suppressed 100% of the time. With a Lilja barrel with an SLR gas block, the thing trashed new Lapua brass in ~2-3 firings. The block has 15 settings, however you'd find the setting where it wouldn't cycle and open it up one click, and you're back to trashing brass. When I swapped to a proof research barrel with a +2/ELGS, it made all the difference; no more warped case rims/heads.

Mind you, it'd kill brass with relatively light loads. We're talking 123s going 2600 and 130s in the 2500s.

Even with the proof barrel now, I don't shoot with high end brass. I ended up buying a bunch of military .308 brass, and doing the full prep work on it before sizing down to .260. This way I don't care if I trash it, nor do I care if I lose it.

I haven't seen any accuracy degradation as a result either.

In my Gas Guns I use once fired factory brass I have from years of shooting.

If you don't have any factory ammo brass laying around, maybe look into getting the cheapest 6.5 creedmoor factory ammo and shoot it up until you have enough brass to work with. Well at least that's what I would do.

One of my Gas guns is a M1A and I use F.C. brass in it ( I have around 1k from FGMM and another 2k+ from all different headstamp 308 factory brass).

Some powders work better with the guns gas system than others. M1A is smooth with H-4895 but Varget no as smooth)

I have no problem getting 5x or 6x reloads from the brass. I throw it in the scrap bucket at 6 firings because the rims are chewed a bit and don't want to take any chances with extraction. And by 5 firings the brass could use annealing, and that's too much work for a Gas Gun.

I shoot nearly the same loads in my 6.5 Creedmoor AR as my 6.5 Creedmoor bolt guns. Around 41.5gr H4350 with 140gr bullets. Don't see any difference in brass life between them. Using mostly Hornady brass.

I've got a AR-10 platform in 6.5x47 Lapua. I heard all the horror stories about the brass abuse, but as I built the gun with an adjustable gas block and a low mass BCG, I haven't noticed any problems using Lapua brass.

I have Shaw AR10 on 6.5cm.
It it straight from factory. No ajustabke gas block. But it was only $1040.00 out the door with a 24 inch ss threaded barrel. It shoots the federal 140 gr OTM ammo 7/8 group.
Now to answer your question on my gun. Ha ha ha. It is very hard on brass. Gun smith has polished Ramps , bolt carrier every thing , but I am still getting a bad gouged on brass in one spot close to neck.
I live with because it shoots so good and don’t want to box it up and send gun back. Every gun is different but my AR10 is hard in brass. Marty
