6.5 300 WBY Project

I have been working on this project for a few weeks off and on as time allows. I had a Accustock from a Savage 116 that worked nicely. I had an old style pre 66 Savage 110 action I converted to a modern (non recessed) bolt. Unfortunately I had to buy a whole new bolt as the head pin was 90 degrees opposite. I sourced a trigger for this old action, probably the last one in the US and paid big bucks for it. Had to do some modifications and then get it tuned so the safety worked, it was a PITA but it breaks clean at 2.5lbs and everything works as it should. Next I had to open the action up for the long 6.5 300 round, did this on the milling machine and recut the feed ramp. I realized at 3.600 there was NO WAY the internal magazine was going to work. I bought bottom metal and a special long .300 win mag magazine for wildcat loads that gave me 3.800. It is a Wilson heavy barrel in 1:8 twist, I cut the chamber and head spaced a bit on the tight side. Anyways here is the finished rifle ready for the scope and range. It feeds beautifully from the magazine!

I was really torn on whether I should put a muzzle break on it, I guess I will shoot it and see how wild it is. I prefer no brake shooting out the deer stand.

How did it work out?

Horrible! It does not like that bullet powder combo at all! I was getting 6" groups at 100 I am going to try N165 and the 120gr Nosler BT, I read that is a very accurate load for this caliber.

I also found some specific load for the 130 terminal ascent from Federal

they are showing

Retumbo 73 to 79.2 grains so I will also give that a whirl. However 3226fps is the max listed velocity that is not impressive for a 130gr bullet. I have always heard the 6.5-300 is the fastest 6.5 but it has a ways to go to catch my 26 Nosler.

So far my 26 Nosler is out performing this, it is a TAC driver, shoots bug holes at 3300+fps with a 143gr Bondstrike.

One other note, I took the new Lab Radar crono today, it was a real PAIN and didn't record half the time.

We still had a fun day, god blessed us with warmth, sunshine and no wind. We were also working loads for the 7mm-08 I built my son, the Mr2000 powder is impressive, fast and accurate running 3040fps and shooting sub MOA first time out, it wants to go faster, ever step up on the ladder the group got smaller, but I only had loaded up to 46gr no pressure, I am going to take it up to 47gr in small increments, I think we can get 1/2MOA.

Also got to shoot my custom built 28 Nosler again, that rifle makes me smile :)

Thanks for the update. I have read that H1000 works really well in the 6.5-300 Wby but it will be while before I get mine. How long is your barrel? I am like you I am expecting more velocity than that.

My barrel is 27" I have pretty much every Magnum powder made so I will try some different things, I do have 5 lbs of H1000 also so I will see it does any better. I am working up a variety of loads and bullets just to zero in on what it might like, then I will tune in once I find it. I also have a 30" Krieger barrel in 6.5 sitting on the shelf, as a last ditch I will chamber it and try it, if all else fails

I once dealt with a Weatherby in .240 that was doing the same thing, I fixed it by bedding the entire barrel instead of free float and it started shooting less than 1/2 MOA. One never knows with these things.
