6.5-284

i have a6.5 284 on a remington action barrel is a pac-nor 5 groove ss supermatch contour med palma. chambered in 6.5 .290 neck and i can't get it to shoot for nothing. i load 50.1 grains of reloader 22 behind 139 grain lapua scenars i've tried everything else i could think of and my best groups are about 1/2 inch with no consistency. i hope one of you guys or gals could give me some ideas.

Its a bit difficult to pitch the advice at the right level without knowing more e.g. what is your performance with other guns, what sort of rest setup do you have, was it put together by a good BR gunsmith etc. I have several years experience with this calibre, so may be able to offer some things to try, but don't want to insult you by suggesting things like "have you looked at your trigger technique?" if you are a highly accomplished shooter!

So more information please?

Alan

i'm a fairly good shooter in ibs tournaments at 100 and 200 yds i own a 30 fatboy a 30 br and a 6ppc that each of them can shoot in the 1's and 2's when i stear them correctly i own a farley rest and good rear bag. the stock on my 6.5 284 i put my 30 fat boy in and shot a small 1 so i don't think its the stock. i'm just lost.

I have also shot 123 sierras and 130 bergers and have not been vary successful i think the barrel must be junk.

my 6.5-284 with a 140gr sierra did not start shooting till i bump up to 52gr of RL22 i still need to go up in powder some.

What yardage are you testing at and at what velocity?
Most 6.5x284 shooters are using 8 & 8.5 tw barrels along with
H4350x or H4831 powders. There also might be something loose in your optics set up,loose base screws/rings etc.

Good Luck & Good shooting.
Gary.

i am testing at 100 and 200 yards the velocity is 2900 and the scope and mounts are not a problem i have checked them a bunch.

Jofus, I have yet to meet a Pac Nor barrel that stinks and I'm a bit worried with its 1-9" twist rate in relationship with the long bullets that you are shooting at moderate velocities... Maybe you should try some bullets that are known to shoot well in a .264 no matter what, like the Sierra 85 flat base or the Nosler Ballistic Tip 120 and see what happens. If there's no improvement, check other things as well: How did the action work with its former chambering or with its former barrel? You're a PPC shooter so I guess you already checked the crown with a magnifying glass, ditto for the 100% lug contact... The best cure, short of getting a new barrel, would be to send the rifle back to Rick & Penny and ask them to check it and maybe cut the chamber and redo the chambering and fitting job.

Maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions and expect to much out of it I shoot the small case capacity bench cartridges and think it should shoot as good. thank you guys

Sorry to bother you guys again but i just found out my neck is a.286 instead of .290 it is just stamped wrong if anyone could tell me what neck bushing I should use I would appreciate it. All I could figure is maybe their reamer was worn.

.286 sounds very unusual. The neck walls would need to be very thin,no more than 0.010). I haven't heard of anyone going under .290.

I have the same barrel pacnor 1:9 twist .286 reamer .010" thick necks rem action have only about 70 rounds through it 50.5 grains 4831sc 140MK .320" at 100yds 47.5 re22 140mk .270" at 100yds five shots each just put in new trigger hope for improvment gonna try 142mks and bergers
bergers web sight recomends 1:9 I know alot of guys are shooting tighter.

jofus,

I was reading your velocities at 100 and 200 yards. I have a 6.5-284 myself and everything that i have read says you need to get them up to around 3000fps the closer the better. I havent got a load to shoot very well either but the best that i have shot yet have been a half inch at 100 yards with 51.5grs a h4831sc with a 140 berger. I have not chronied my gun yet but i thing that it should be close. I am still trying diff. powders and trying to better my load.
