6.5-284. Where do I start?

Hello my friends! I'm obtaining a GA Precision Hospitaller in 6.5-284 in the near future and I'm also going to be re-chambering my Savage long action in 6.5-284. I'm actually going to use a nutless barrel and cut the tenon with a shoulder, so it will have a Remington 700 style barrel and do away with the barrel nut.

I don't know much about this round. Any hints on where to start with loads? I've shot this rifle before with fantastic results out to 900 yards. I cleaned a "Know your limits" target on my first try at 400 yards on the same day.

I've got about 2 pounds of IMR-4350 and about a half pound of H4350. What are other popular powders for this round? I've got about 1000 Nosler 140 grain custom comps as well.

Any suggestions on powders and bullets and any other subject would be appreciated.

Tony.

4350 isn't a real good 65-284 powder. H4831sc and H1000 are two very good choices. 52-58 grains of H1000 is probably start to finish for the 65-284. H4831sc has been my exclusive choice. I'm at around 53.0 grains in mine. Somewhere between 50-54 for the H4831sc. RL26 is another that shines in this cartridge. Never tried the custom comp from Nosler. I've used 140 Amax, ELDS, RDF, VLD and SMKs. All have shot very well.

One thing in particular...its an overbore cartridge. If you purchase your projectile by the 1000 count, you may want to add another barrel blank in your shopping cart as well:cool:

H4350 has been the “ Go To” powder for this cartridge. But is contributes to the barrel burner reputation. Tried H 4831 n got pressure before the 2950 fps target.

H1000 has been magical for accuracy and velocity. VV165 is also an excellent second choice.

All the above is with 142 SMKs or Lapua 139s.

I have always used H4350. Just built a new rifle and will try H4831SC, N165, H1000 because I have some. When I build a rifle for some one, I tell them to get 1000 142SMKs, 8lb H4350, 200 Lapua cases. When the bullets are gone, so is the powder, and the barrel and cases are done too.

Pretty spot on. I usually get 7-10 firings from Lapua brass and that's the only kind of brass I buy. Might get 16 pounds of powder from 200 Lapua cases but that's only a plus. Good to know about the H4350. Only use that in my 260

I used H4350 for a while but, got better results (accuracy and velocity) with H4831 SC, Lapua brass, SMK 142 or JLK 140 are both excellent, Wolf Russian primers or Federal 210 M primers are a close second.
