6.5-284 to 6mm-284

Well, my reloading, "stuff" for the 6mm-284 is rolling on in. I have a question. I will be resizing Lapua 6.5-284 to 6mm-284. I read where Lapua brass is pretty stout. Would it be advisable to turn the necks some before I try to resize them? Right now my brass,(new) is reading .014-.015 thickness. So, I guessing the numbers will go up even higher when I squish it down? Just don't want to ruin one of them, "gold plated" pieces of brass!

While not specifically from 6.5 to 6mm, I have necked down a number of different calibers using Lapua brass such as 22 to 20, 7mm to 6mm, .30 to 6mm, etc.. You should not have any problems with that small neck down. If you do opt to neck turn prior, don't take it all the way down as you will want to do it again after necking down. The brass never ends up uniform in thickness after necking up or down. I turn after necking and it works well for me.

OP,,if you turn before necking down the fat donut meat is pushed around the corner and will not "haunt" you later,,,Roger..(culdnt resist the Halloween inference),,,,

I will be resizing Lapua 6.5-284 to 6mm-284.

When necking up and or down it is assumed the case neck gets thicker and or thinner. It is possible the neck gets longer and or shorter. When necking down part of the neck becomes part of the shoulder. When forming/necking up I have cases that shorten .035".

Has anyone ever thought of pushing the shoulder back on a 6mm-284 case and forming a long neck like on the 6mm Rem cartridge??? I bet it wouldn't burn barrels as bad then so you would get better life out of it..

I had one of these for a while. Simply resized and shot them. No neck turning needed. This was lapua brass. Gun shot sub 1 inch at 200 yards which was plenty good for varmits. ED K

I also like to size the necks before I turn them. Another hint, watch for the neck ring, I have to inside neck turn to get rid of that doughnut bat. ever other time I load the case.
