6.5-284 or 260AI

I was reading on one other site about the 260 and was curious if you could get the same velocity out of the 260AI as the 6.5-284. Also is the Ai more consistent and barrel life any better.

I have no experience with a 6.5-284 but my 260AI shoots 140gr bullets with 47.6 grs of powder at 2930fps 26" shilen barrel, using Winchester 7-08 cases necked down to .264 I have 450rds through it and the lands haven't started walking away yet.

One thing to take into consideration when comparing a 6.5-284 with a .260AI has nothing to do with ballistics or barrel life.

When building a repeater with a staggered column magazine many shooters have encountered feeding problems while attempting to cycle the action rapidly. A center feed system like the Accuracy International will cure this, of course it's of no consequence if you're contemplating a single shot build.

A .260AI might be too long for the magazine of a short action if you're loading the long heavy bullets out very far. If that's the case the AI loses the advantages that are inherent in a short action. If you have to go to a long action it might be wise to opt for the 6.5-284 with its superior factory brass without the need to neck up or down and the inevitable donuts.

Surgeon can remove the front plate out of AICS mags, allowing a COAL beyond 2.9" for the .260AI. I have one being built right now.

New Savage/Stevens mags are all center feed, internal or detachable). The short action Dmag will house a 3.00" OAL cartridge so ideal for the 260AI. It might also work well with the 284 case. don't have any to test.

Feeds smooth and slick. You no longer have to spend mega bucks for the AI mods.

3.00" should be plenty, mine is a single shot, don't have to worry about mag length, also have not experienced donuts with the win 7-08cases and have had good luck with just plain ol rem brass, after sorting)

My Coal with 142smk's is 2.905 to leave a little room in the cartridge for powder.

Like Spotcheck_Billy was saying on the OAL. If indeed you decide to go with a 260AI., Just have your reamer set-up with a shallow throat, so you can still utilize the magazine and still get the accuracy you want, this might however put your bullet to far into the powder column, reducing your powder charge which reduces velocity. Also the AI cases have a tendacy to not feed as great with the 40degree shld., thats why I have a 260 Rogue,37degree shoulder on a Savage 110 Long-action) using 47gr of H4831sc.& 139gr Lapua.

Regarding your question, I think the 6.5-284 will always be faster when comparing apples and oranges. I believe the 260AI is capable of MAX loads in 48.0-to maybe 48.7 of H4831. And the 6.5-284 is around 51 to 51.5gr MAX.. Hope this helps

In deciding upon a 6.5mm chambering, I'd choose a case which would mechanically work best in my gun and worry about performance later. Realistic velocity gains in the larger 6.5's are fairly minimal over the standard .260 Remington, which tells me that the .260 Remington is already close to bore capacity).

Comparing the .260 Remington to the .264 Winchester Magnum in my 7th edition Hornady Manual, top velocities are only about 300 FPS apart. Not much performance advantage when recoil, noise, powder consumption and barrel life are taken into consideration.

Ever consider the 6.5x55 SE?

It gives you the velocity you need, good quality brass available, and is not as hard on the barrel as the 6.5x.284.

Works for me!
