6.5-284 Norma/143 Eld X OAL

Im having a new barrel spun up to shoot this particular bullet, and Im just curious what kind of freebore/OAL I should give the smith? Thanks.

Is this on a long or short action?

I've always, generally, stuck to having right around the bullets diameter seated in the neck so if you are using a long action you'll want an OAL of right around 3.190. If your building this on a short action it'll be considerably less if you plan to use it as a repeater, if you are ok single feeding then you can get away with using a longer OAL. Also, you want to give yourself a little room to chase the lands as the throat wears.

.188" is the default standard for 140/142 bullets, not sure how that works for the 143 though.

I believe the 6.5-284 Norma chamber is designed for the heavier, long bullets. I recently chamber one of these and the shorter bullets are seated base at the neck junction with the 140's seated slightly below, about where the boat tail becomes bearing surface. Seating .010-.015 off lands. Very good accuracy considering I fitted that barrel to a '98 Mauser Action. Using IMR4350 powder.

That's what I use. 3.190"oal, touching lands at 2.434" cbto, but that's with 140 HVLD Berger. Misplaced notes on the the 143s, but I do remember the early lot #s required a lot of sorting, to group well.
