6.5-284 c.o.a.l.

i ordered a shilen pre-fit 6.5-284 and was told to send in a dummy round to fit to the chamber. i want to shoot lapua brass and 142smk. should i just full length resize and set to 3.100 or ?????. looking for advice, thanks cliff P.S. best website by far for precision shooting, i've been reading for awhile and learned alot.

I would not seat it any longer than that. It will clear the neck-shoulder junction at 3.100. At least mine does anyway.

Cliffe, I just measured my OAL from case head to point of bullet
using Lapua brass and 142 SMK's and touching the lands. That measurement is 3.146 This is a load for a 6.5-284 in the new Savage F-class Factory Chambered rifle. As I said above this length will allow the bottom of the bearing surface of the bullet to be located above the neck-shoulder junction. From what I can read and by asking questions this is what most shooters are wanting with the 6.5-284 cartridge. I think an added advantage to having a long "freebore" or "throat" is you may be able to put a little more flight fuel in the case. This may not be true with "a particular rifle" such as yours. You will have to do some load testing to find out if yours will allow you that option. I am loading 49.0 to 50.0 gr. of Hodgdon 4831sc just out of the gate. I have only begun to break-in my barrel and blow out brass at this point, so I can't tell you much about it at this point. I have shot one 3 shot group so far at 100 yds. and it measured a .322. Those 3 shots were # 10,11, and 12 from my new barrel and of course I cleaned it before this group was fired
I wish I had more info to give you but until I shoot it again that's about it. I really think you would be fine at 3.100 to 3.150 measuring from case head to point of bullet, but a more accurate method of measuring would be from case head to bullet ogive. Points of bullets are mis-leading in terms of consistancy.
Hope this helps man. I will keep you posted.
