6.5-284 accuracy loads??

I'll start off with mine--has done 1.35" 5 shot at 500M and 5.3" 10-shot at 1000yds

lapua case turned to .2912" loaded round for a .294 chamber
51.6 h4831SC
210M primer
142SMK sorted by bearing surface, then weight
in the lands around .020"

JB

My best load is 52.0 grns H4831 with a CR 147 grn moly coated bullet in Norma cases with a chamber of .290 and a loaded rnd od .288 bullet seated on the lands with a Fed 210m primer

Best group so far is 1.514" at 600 yds with a perfect score of 55 with 5 x's and a new World record in LG class for the IBS and a new World Record for aggregate score in HG class with a score of 200 also at 600 yds.

Hard to post anything seeing the above posted results but just to give an alternative to the 4831,which my rifle doesn't like)...

H4350 anywhere between 43 and 48 gr depending on your rifle. Velocities run 2850 out of a 26" barrel and this barrel is a little fast even with the conservative loading.

139 gr Lapua Scenar seating depth once again determined by your rifle, mine likes to be off the lands.

CCI primer, ran out of match primers and the plain old large rifle primers worked as well as the match primers.

Norma brass, sorted by neck variances, the batch with .001" neck variance was cleaned up to a finished neck thickness of .015" to insure unifrom bullet pull and cocentric bullet runout.

The rifle is not tight necked per se, but it is a minimum chamber.

Shoots in the .2s at 100, don't have a long range anywhere close to try it out at range. ES and SD are single digit.

Hi Jb1000br,

I have just finished running in my 6.5-284, and am planning to start load development this weekend, I am just wondering what sort of velocities you are getting out of your combination, and what barrel length/twist you are using?

Cheers

JB,

Thanks very much for the info.

I have been reading a few posts and see the term ladder test used a fair bit especially for initial development, however I have never tried this method for load development, I only have the very basics of the concept, would you be able to expand on the correct procedure to conduct the test and what information I should gather whilst performing the test.

I did read your post on BRCentral archives and read the article you linked to about "OCW" is this an improved version of the ladder test? As I understand the ladder test generally involves loading a set of cartridges incrementally increasing each one by 0.2 - 0.3 gr and looking for a point where the velocities tend to group at what is refered to as a sweet spot? Is this correct? Should I also be looking a POI vs POA as well, and if so at what range? My local range is only set up for 200yds. As a side note, is one round at each charge weight enough to determine the sweet spot or would the average of 3 rounds be a better gauge? Is there anything else I should be looking for whilst performing the ladder test?

Thanks in advance

Muzza

JeffT--nekkid--no moly for me!!

Muzza--what i did with this was one shot at each increment,.3 apart)

I look at POI clusters and velocities.

range: 250-300yds

Had a nice cluster,1/4min apart vertically) with 51.3, .6 and .9)

so i took the center and ran with it--has worked so far.

BTW--this cluster repeated at 200yds with 140gn clinch rivers.

I shot this ladder at 100yds at first--had 11 shots into about .5" over a 3gn load window

after i had the powder charge, i shot 3 shot groups with 51.3,6,9 and again, 51.6 was the winner with a .100" 3-shot group at 100yds.

ES was good so i didnt play with primers, but a may test out the PMC/Russians in the future ;)

Hi JB,

Thanks for the help.

It has all worked out sweet.

I have settled on 52gr 2213SC,4831SC equivalent)
lapua case turned to .287" loaded round for a .290 chamber
210M primer.
I tried 139gr Lapuas but settled on 142 sierra MK's.

I won Light class in a small 500m Fly shoot 2 weeks ago and my gunsmith who was doubling came second and landed small group of the day with a 2.120". 2 of my targets were 1.5" for 4, sure scared the hell out of the fly.

Thanks again.

Muzza

Hey JB,

Yeah I hail from Down Under.

I haven't had the chance to meet Jeff as yet. But I know the name well, and look forward to meeting him one day.

Cheers

This may be a stupid question, but anyway, how do you know how far down to turn your necks, basically whats the process for finding that measurement for a particular rifle?

Great info! Thanks. Thinking seriously about a flatter-shooting round for 1000 yard prone matches. May just join the herd and go with a 6.5-284. Regards, Guy
