Looking to develop a new load with IMR 7828, 56.0 + grains or so.

Do I need a mag primer to light off this slow powder ? I have CCI & Federal mag primers.
Also have Federal 210 Match and CCI Br2's

The non mag primers light off 56.0 grains of N560 just fine.

Yes, I will work charge weights up slowly.
Just want to know if it would be more efficient lighting up 7828 with a mag primer.

What say you ?

Thanks
Phil

FWIW - I've been using Fed 210s under H4832sc in straight .30-06 loads. They work just fine, and I suspect they would also likely work well in your specific situation. Nonetheless, why not simply do a primer test as RegionRat suggested? It's just a few loaded rounds and will answer your question empirically.

I had a lot of trouble with a magnum rifle and have decided that I would error on the side of consistency every time in the future. The builder insisted on using large rifle primers in a magnum and it was inconsistent. I have not had any problems with magnum primers at all. I see no up side to using a marginal primer when sometime in the future you may want to hunt in a super cold climate. If its a match gun what happens when the match date coincides with a weird weather day. When i worked on my magnum load I talked to Tim North that owned Broughton barrels, he was into long range magnums like I am and convinced me to use Winchester magnum primers and out of my gun and his shot better than fed LR Match and Fed magnum. The gunsmith was sure that the nonmagnum primers would produce the best group and they did not a magnum primer did.

I have built several 6.5-06AIs over the years. They have all performed best with a magnum primer regardless of powder. H1000 or Retumbo has always given me the best results with 140 class bullets.

My 6.5-06 AI below. I have tried F210s and quickly abandoned them for Rem 9 1/2 and CCI Magnum 250s because of better SDs. I have shot 4 lbs of IMR 7828SC through my Krieger barrel. Better velocities with double base powder but they also burn hotter than 7828.

Did some testing today.
BR2's and 210 match primers both had 1 flier.
However -

Not too bad for a hunting rifle
