6.5-06 vs 6.5-270

I read too much. When my gs pulled my Douglas barrel in 6.5-06 off after 1,200 rounds he said it looked brand new. It takes this website to differentiate between a seeming daughter product like a 6.5-6 and it's bastard parental lineage. Any manual would never print there is a difference in parent cases for this round, but simply say it's a 30-06 necked down. It's a 25-06 with a single pass through any .264 expander ball, load and fire. 140g 2,800 fps out of 27-inch barrel and H4831 the first and every time.

I’ve owned a 6.5-06 and a now own the AI version. My answer to your specific question is 6.5-270 AI. However...

If I had it to do over again, I’d get a chamber reamer set-up for Nosler 280 AI brass. That preformed brass is actually a bit short of true 280 AI brass (new SAAMI specs) and can be one pass sized to 6.5-06 AI. I don’t want to fire form any more than I have to, so I’d set that shoulder for the new SAAMI spec 280 AI dimension, give new brass a .001-.002” bump, make sure my neck was large enough (+.002”) for the 280 brass and carry on. It’s also very good brass, I’ve heard Norma makes it for Nosler. The 6.5-06 AI (and Sherman) is one of the best cartridges I’ve ever used and definitely deserves more praise in North American big game cartridge discussions. The utility of that brass is definitely worth building a rifle around, your total PITA of ownership is going to be so low you’ll feel like you stole something.
