6/284

Hi, I'm new here, looking for talk, loading data, results, talk, etc. about this great cartridge. Did I get on the wrong forum or what? I'd like to here from people with long range results, etc.
Thanks
Dick C.

Dick, Hope you keep your barrel manufacturer on speed dial! ;D
The latest version of QuickLoad lists it if that helps. Heavy bullets with slow powders should help maximize your barrel life. The Hornady 105 grain A-Max should give you desirable terminal ballistics up to and including Whitetail. Hold all the bashing as I will include "with the appropriate bullet placement"! ;)
I believe this was one that Hornady temporarily halted production on so I wish you luck in finding them!

It took me some time to settle on a powder/load. FWIW I settled on H4831sc (currently AKA Rocking Horse Poo or Hens Teeth). 52.9g with115 DTACs was were I ended up, running at 3225 fps, but start with a lesser load.

Thanks guys, after 52 years in the gun business I acquired a lot of bullets and powder, i.e.: 3031, 4064, 4320, 4350, 4895, 4831, H570 & H870, I am currently running the 70g BallisticTip with 56g of 4831, seems like a reasonable load, 100g Nosler with 49g of 4350 as an antelope/deer load, and the 58g H'dy VMax w/49g of 4320....creates a strawberry haze at 3-400 yds on PDs! I'm not into super accuracy, minute-of-prairie dog is all I need, I do like shooting at 1000 yards but eyes not to good anymore, my 24 power Ultra Varmint Unertl has served me well. Shot a .228 AI Krag for years but no bullet selection anymore, it's a great round, it goes way out there.
Thanks for any input, I'm still shooting at 75 and enjoy it!

I helped a guy build a 6-284 on a remmy action and we settled on the 97 grain v-max with h4831sc and it shot at 125 yds as accurate as a bench gun. I shot a 5 shot group that was in the mid ones without even really trying on a picnic bench that wiggled. The 6-284 with a decent barrel is a lazer as you well know. One day I will build one just for fun sometime in the near future. I don't care if it is a barrel burner,it was just so fun to shoot it,it bit me right there. Good luck and please ask questions and welcome to the best forum on the net.

I have about 20 pounds of 4831, use lots of it. I shoot 58gr. and the 65gr. Hornady a lot at prairie dogs, 54 to 56 grains of 4831 makes them hate their mother.....they just disappear. 400 yds is about the limit of my eyes on PDs, can still see the 1000 yd. target (so far).
Thanks for everyones replies. One of you mentioned belonging to the American Gunsmith, I used to write a column for them years ago.
Cheers,
Dick C. :)

Fired the new rifle, 1½" at 100yds, first 5 out of the barrel, 58g Hornady w/52g 4320, not the greatest but 'minute of prairie dog' anyway.
