6-284 or 243 wssm

Hello is there any advantage over one or the other? I have a 6-284 but looking to rebarrel with a longer barrel. Is there any adavantage to switching to the 243 wssm or even a 25 wssm?

just looking for some imput.

thanks doug

JS has a good point, and he's funny :-*

Some depends on your action, and your real world needs here.
The cartridges are nothing the same, and neither are the actions for them(not just a barrel change).

Actually, Win RELOADING brass in WSSM is as good or better than Lapua. It's just very very thick.
I would choose my culled & turned WSSM brass, formed to 26WSSM, over any other brass in existence.

JS may be funny but I'll bet he has never owned a 243 WSSM. I wish people would save their comments for stuff they actually have experience with.

I owned a 243 WSSM, 30" 8 twist Kreiger. I sold it at a round count of 670 (105 coated AMax bullets at 3250 MV). The rifle is now very close to 1000 rounds and can still place in the top 10% at a 1000 yard steel competition.

My bad I forgot to mention what my intentions for it are and the action. I am using a ruger m77 action and I am going to use it for hunting.

It was origanally a 6mm then my dad hat it reamed to the 6-284. My only thing is that it has a 22" long barrel thats why im looking to rebarrel it with either the same or or 243 wssm.

Mainly deer and up to 300-400yrds and Im not sure on the twist yet. I thinking maybe 10 twist cause that should cover me up to 105g bullets Im thinking.

I wouldn't try 105s in a 10 twist. You would have to push them real hard to get them to stabilize. Either cartridge will easily take down a deer at 400 yards with a 95 grain bullet which will stabilize in either cartridge with a 10 twist.
Since you already have a 6-284, why not just use it?

If you are looking for a somewhat hotrod 6mm cartridge for deer sized critters I would probably look at a 243 ackley pushing some sort of stouter built bullet in the 90 to 100 grain range. Something like the nolser partitions or ballistic tips or accubonds.

I don't own either, but i do have a 6.5 WSSM (or 26wssm, or..whatever they call it) Like Mikecr said. Once sorted it is good stuff. I needed to neck turn and then
I sorted cases by weight. I have beat the living krap out of my brass!! The primer pockets are still VERY tight after 6+ firings and no case stretch at all. I run 140 bergers at the same speed that the 6.5-284 guys are.

Good stuff.

4x,

What kind of barrel life can you get with it? Is it about the same a a 6.5/.284?

JS
Just checked my record book. I now have 1240 rounds through it and I see no loss in accuracy yet. To be fair, I load it down for my Jr. PETA member to shoot F class with. Reduced the load from 48 G H4831 to 43.5. My 48 gr load gave me about 2930 -2970...depending on what kind of mood my chrono was in. :-[ Probably 40% of the shots have been reduced. The problem with this round is that in my 8" BAT "M" the brass does not eject...not good for fast 1K strings. My nephew shot a 5.XX in a shoot off against me a couple of years ago with it. That is the only compeditive 1K group it has shot. Some day wind the wind isn't howling i will shoot it in a match just to see.

Same question, what kind of bbl life do you expect with that 6.5WSSM?

I guess I should have said up front. This is my first one, so I don't have a clue what to expect. The reason I got it is that I wanted something smaller than my 300 WBY for my kids to shoot, and it had to fit the .532 mg bolt face because I didn't want to buy another bolt. my guess...2000+. It is a 30 inch tube, so I could set it back after that if it looks like there is anything left to work with. I am fairly confident that the 200 pieces of brass that I have...actually I only use 150 of them...the lightest and heaviest went into a batch of 50 that rarely gets shot...will last me the life of the tube and then some. Tough stuff.

I think your 2000 guess is good.
Mine is improved with a 35deg shoulder & a few more grains H2O capacity.
I shoot 47gr IMR4350 @ 3020fps from 28" barrel with 139Laps. This is my tune, but I've had it to 3200fps in testing before requiring FL sizing(which I will never do).
At ~950 rounds I ruined my 1st barrel in a cleaning experiment and switched it out for it's twin. But at that point the lands had yet to move at all. I'm confident I could have gotten expected 1800rnds of accurate life from it & will with my present barrel.

I currently have over 30 reloads on 50 cases. Fitted chambers, so I don't have to FL size, anneal, or even neck size. Just shoulder bumps. But I do a slight partial NS for the accuracy it happened to provide me. Not a single measurement has changed in them from initial fireformed.
So I'm sure these cases will last more barrels than I'll ever burn up.

IMO, anyone disappointed with WSSM reloading brass might as well give up on reloading, and/or gun 'designing'.
