6-284 case forming

Friend of mine is having a 6-284 built, and has asked for help with a question. Can 6-284 brass be formed from Lapua 6.5-284 and if so what is the procedure? Standard neck - no turn. He is planning to use Redding S full length die for reloading, and has chose bushings based on factory 6.5-284 neck thickness. Thanks in advance for the replies.

If he's starting out with 6.5-284 brass all he'll need to do is run them through a FL die, prep/prime/and load. I started off with 284 brass and a forming die and the necks were still not thick enough to be a concern. If he's shooting a tight neck chamber then he might have to turn the necks, std chamber is no problem.

I used Win. 284 brass and plenty of case lube in a Redding 6-284 sizing die, I didn't use a case forming die. Fire forming finished it out.

With the Lapua brass, you're only going down half a caliber so you can do it in one step. Some guys prefer to start with a Type-S bushing neck die and use an intermediate bushing and then finish with a 6-284 FL sizing die.

As a final step, after the 6mm FL sizing, I would run a mandrel down the neck to push any donut out. This should also make the neck tension a little more workable as a std 6-284 FL sizing die will probably reduce the neck diameter more than necessary, unless you've had it honed, opened up) a little bit.
