6-284 and 87vmax

I just ordered a Pac-Nor 1-10twist in 6-284 for my Savage 12BVSS-S. I've decided to use the 87vmax, or Berger 88ld. I'm looking to get into the 3600fps range for long range varminting. If you had to pick one or two powders with the best combination of accuracy and velocity, which one's would you choose. I have IMR4350, R22, IMR4831. Is seems from other posts that H4350 and H4831 are recommended more often. Thanks

I would use the RL-22. Sierra is also indicating that this powder will be the best powder to use for accuracy loads in their data. I have found that the slower powders will still work the best in this cartridge.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

I also prefer Re22 in my 12 twist 6-284 pushung the 87 VMax's to 3650 with great accuracy. Though the rifle has only seen 20 rounds in the last five years, since I started playing with the 6 Dasher.

I am using a much heavier bullet (DTAC115) than you plan to use, but I struggled with RL22, amongst other powders, but the lights came on when I tried H4831SC. 52.9g clocking 3223 fps

Today I was burning 51grs of H4831SC and pushing 90gr Berger BT at 3600 FPS. ( 30" Brux 8"twist bbl )I was shooting at water filled Rock star cans at 421 yds in ther NV high desert.

I've read alot of your posts on the 6284. What's been your favorite powder for the 87 vmax and bullets close to that weight?

N560 is what I used for my 10 twist 6-284 with the bullet weights you mentioned. It provided the best combination of speed and accuracy out of that rifle. However I was not able to reach 3600fps with those bullet weights with any powder combination that I tried. WD

I have a 26-inch 12-twist Shilen barrel chambered in 6x284 that shoots 87 grain V-Maxes at 3600 using H4831SC. Have killed PDs out to 1,020 yards. This barrel's throat is real tired now after 900 rounds.

I haven't had much success with 105s in my 26" 8 twist 6-284 Shilen. After taking a good long look at Chris Long's OBT, I have come to the conclusion that 26" and 105 bullets are not a good combination in a 6-284. Because I am either at max pressure or too mild to be on one of the OBT nodes.
So I am considering going down to a 95 grain bullet so that the OBT node falls into a more comfortable pressure zone. Question: Which 95 grain bullet has the highest BC?

CB, I'd be surprised if the 87gr Vmax's will stay together at 3600 fps, they came apart on us shooting them in a 8tw 6mmAI at under 3500 fps. We could actually see dirt fly up from pieces of the jacket striking the ground way short of the targets. It reminded us of a shotgun blast. Loads were developed and tested at a lower altitude with the temperature above 90 degrees here in Texas, they grouped well when tested but at around 2500 to 2800 elevation and temps around 80 to 85 they came apart. Being you'll be using a 10tw they might stay together for you.

Like Yellow 11 I am using the heaver bullet 105 Berger,I tried RE22 and was blowing primers to get upper MV, however RE 25 brought my MV up to 3550 with no pressure signs. It might be worth a try with the lighter 87 G bullet.

With a 12-twist, the 87 V-Max will stay together up to 3800 FPS. I haven't been past that speed. In my rifle, they just weren't as accurate at 3800 as at 3600. That bullet is a prairie dog killing machine. Plenty of acrobatics.

I'm on my 3rd bbl on my rifle. In my 26" HART Re#17 worked well. Now I have a 30" Brux 8"twist. For the 87gr V-Max H4831SC 51.5 grs produced an average of 3625. I'm not going to mess with any other powders ,because I know bbl life is short. I paid big bucks for the gun smith work.

Once apon a time, I was a barrel burner, just had to cook those small projectile 8),I no longer play that game. I am putting together a 6mm-284 with a 1-10 twist, and that is all I know about the barrel, a friend pick it up for me. So I am sure who is the maker of it! I can tell you this, when I get it done, I will have to drive right beside the bench, the barrel weigh's 15 lbs, I havn't weighted the reciever but it is massive! I am not for sure what bullet I will be using maybe 100gr or 105gr, I will do alot of testing, but I would like to shoot a bullet with a high BC. Have you got your 6mm284 shooting like you want and if so what did you settle on.
